Experiment no. 3: Measurements of various objects and determination of area and the volume of the objects in SI units and FPS units. Purpose: To understand the concept of area, volume and different conversion factors.
Apparatus and specimen:
Steel cabinet Wooden cube
Related Theory:
Surface Area: It is the area of the surface that are in contact with the atmosphere. Surface area of the body having length ‘l’, breath ‘b’ and height ‘h’ is given as: S.A1 = l x b S.A2 = b x h S.A3 = h x l Volume: The space occupied by a body is called volume. The volume of a body having length ‘l’, breath ‘b’ and height ‘h’ is given as: V=lxbxh
Procedure:
Take three wooden cubes and start measuring their dimensions with the help of a measuring instrument. Calculate the surface area of the six faces of each wooden cube by the given formulas: S.A1 = l x b S.A2 = b x h S.A3 = h x l As the cube has same opposite sides so the surface area of opposite sides will also be identical. Then measure the volume and area of the cabinet provided. Measure the actual dimensions and put the readings in the given formula to calculate the result. Area of the lab is also carried out by measuring the dimensions of the lab.
