Description

Brianna Williams 3/21/2020 Bernadette Stockwell College Writing II Annotated Bibliography on John Dewey Source 1: Pickens, D. K. (2019). John Dewey. Salem Press Biographical Encyclopedia. This first article starting at Dewey’s early childhood and family. He was born on October 20, 1859, to his mother née Lucina Artemisia Rich and his father Archibald Dewey. His family was middle class and lived in Burlington Vermont. After attending the University of Vermont and Johns Hopkins University. After that Dewey started teaching at the University of Michigan then went to the University of Minnesota. Then he went to Columbia University. All of the data given on this website found through Umass database was very relevant and touched upon topics such as his childhood that other articles have not talked about. The author is Pickens, Donald K. and was published by Salem Press Biographical Encyclopedia in 2019 which is also recent data especially because Dewey passed away in 1952. This article is useful because it was a brief oversight of his childhood and adult career. It talked about his jump from university to university very well. And touched briefly on his views. I would use this source in order to get brief quick data about Dewey and I know it would be useful to others as well. Source 2: John Dewey. (2014, April 2). Retrieved from https://www.biography.com/scholar/john-dewey\

In the second article, it was also about John Deweys lifetime but it went into a lot more specific details beyond his career as a professor. They talked about his love life and where he moved and what else he did as a career. The article also went into detail about his writings during his career. As well as his educational views, teaching career, philosophy, Education Reform, Writing, and politics. All of the information from this source match other sources I have read but it gave furthermore specific details which made it longer in length than others but still a very well-formatted article. The author is not given but the publisher is A&E Television Networks. This article was useful for me because it gave me more specific details that are backed up upon by other sources I have read. I do plan to use some parts of this article for future research as it was short and informative and to the point. So I do recommend it to other people. Source 3: PBS Online: Only A Teacher: Schoolhouse Pioneers. (n.d.). Retrieved from https://www.pbs.org/onlyateacher/john.html In the third article about Dewey, it talked about his view of education as a whole. He was known as a philosopher, social reformer and educator according to the article. Dewey changed society’s view of education. He changed the current learning system in schools even today. Dewey argued that students learning should be relevant to them and not just out of a textbook. The information seemed to be informative as it was detail-oriented but also understandable to the average person. It is produced by PBS which is known as a good children’s education source of information. There is no author or publisher but they do have further readings which are by John Dewey Democracy and Education and Education Today and John Dewey on Education: Selected Writings.

This article was informative but I don’t believe I will use it in my writings because it doesn’t involve specific detail and no author or publisher so personally I’m just assuming it is published by PBS since it is on their website, But that is not reliable.

Source 4: John Dewey Hall - History- UVM Psychology Department. (n.d.). Retrieved from https://www.uvm.edu/~campus/dewey/deweyhistory.html The fourth article was not exactly about John Dewey but what he did for his undergraduate university and how he stayed involved as alumni. At the University of Vermont, there was a former medical building that burned down and then was reopened and the speaker was John Dewey. Years later after his death, the hall was renamed after him as Dewey Hall. This article did not relate to my other research because it was more life-oriented as this article was more about his impact on the university which he is buried now. But it was good to know information about his impact. The author of this article Leslie P. Allen who was/is a UVM graduate student. And it was published by The University of Vermont. I plan to use this article in order to formulate information regarding his impact upon the university. And a bit of the history of the University of Vermont. I think I might use it regarding where he is currently buried/what going on around him. Source 5: John Dewey, Philosophy and Education. (n.d.). Retrieved from https://www.lib.uchicago.edu/projects/centcat/fac/facch08_01.html The fifth article is about John Dewey’s impact at the University of Chicago which he taught for a few years as the department head. He was interested in the individual and society as

well as the education system’s impact upon children. They also talked about why he left the university as his relationship as he became successful changed with his co-workers. This article has provided me the information I have not found with any other sources like why John Dewey left the university even though he was very well known and quite famous. The author of this article is Dr. A. B. Hinsdale and is published by the National Council of Education. In this article, it mentioned a little bit of useful information for my project I just probably won’t be including it because I do not plan to use this part of his life to really talk about. Source 6: 403 Forbidden. (n.d.). Retrieved from https://professorships.jhu.edu/professorship/john-dewey-chair/ This article talked about John Dewey’s relationship with the university he attended for his graduate degree, which was John Hopkins University. It then talked about how he was an influential philosopher for the time as well as an educator, of the 20th century. They then talked about how John Dewey was inspired by G. Stanley Hall who was John Hopkins University’s first professor full of psychology which was his path. Then it also talked about his thoughts upon education and society and a brief section about the works he published. This article provided great information about his graduate degree and his time at John Hopkins University. This had good information that was not talked about in other articles but did not name an author but states “cardholder to be named”. But it is published by John Hopkins University and is on their website. I do plan to include some of this information in my final research paper about education and John Dewey. I do believe his graduate degree is just as important information as his undergraduate degree which is why I plan to use it.
