Just Lather, That’s All By: Hernando Téllez

*don’t do reflection* 1. a) The conflicts that are evident in this story are Person V Person and Person V Self. The rebels and against the military, which is the obvious Person V Person. The barber is in conflict with themselves because they are contemplating whether to kill the man who hurts their people or not because they don’t want to be a murderer. In the text it states “And what of all this? Murderer or hero? My destiny depends on the edge of this blade.” which is the barber contemplating this decision and the repercussions he would face. b) The main conflict is Person V Self because it’s the conflict that goes most into detail throughout the story and I grasped a better understanding of this conflict. 2. The climax of the story is when the barber is contemplating the ways she could use the razor to kill Captain Torres. “But he is not afraid. He is a calm man, who is not even thinking about what he is going to do with the prisoners this afternoon. On the other hand, with this razor in my hands, stroking and re-stroking this skin, trying to keep blood from oozing from these pores, I can't even think clearly.” The barber is a rebel, as we found out and she is contemplating whether to kill the man who has killed many of her people, or do her job as a barber and follow the law. 3. Indirect Characterization: “Not one of them comes out of this alive, not one." Indirect Characterization: “I don't know yet. But we'll amuse ourselves” These are indirect characterizations because it is used in dialogue and you get a sense of what Captain Torres is like. He is sort of self-absorbed, cocky and overconfident in himself. Direct Characterization: “He is a calm man” Direct Characterization: “A man of imagination,” These statements are direct characterizations because they are directly describing him. They describe him being calm and imaginative. 4. The barber is the narrator of the story, because he is the one shaving the beard while describing Captain Torres and using the word “I”. 5. 1st person, because the narrator was also in the story. This affects the perspective of the whole story, the barber shows their emotions towards Captain Torres and his perspective on the whole situation. The barber can tell the backstory of all of these wars, and the killing spree Captain Torres went on. 6. Captain Torres is perceived as “mean” and “strong” on the outside and does what he has to do for his side of the battle. He seems nice on the inside, and a softie at heart after what he did for the barber. In the text it states “They told me that you'd kill me. I came to find out. But killing isn't easy. You can take my word for it." And he headed down the street.”

This indicates that Captain Torres is clever and it shows that he is a good Captain even if it is for the wrong reasons. 7. The barber is a rebel, and he seems strong. He thinks about killing, which indicates a lot about her personality. He knows that killing isn’t necessarily good, but needs must when your people are suffering. He thinks thoroughly about this like when he said “He wouldn't suffer. But what would I do with the body? Where wouldI hide it? I would have to flee, leaving all I have behind, and take refuge far away, far, far away.”. 8. My first impression of Captain Torres after re-reading the first three paragraphs is that he is a bit rude, after the way he talked to the barber like this: “It's hot as hell. Give me a shave." I also noticed that he felt more serious and stern in the beginning while he was talking about killing the rebels, like when he said “But pretty soon they'll all be dead." 9. Reasons for killing -

-

“He wouldn’t suffer” “But the sight of the mutilated bodies kept me from noticing the face of the man who had directed it all, the face I was now about to take into my hands.” “A man of imagination, because who else would have thought of hanging the naked rebels and then holding target practice on certain parts of their bodies?”

Reasons against killing -

“Where would I hide the body?” “Hero or Murderer?” “Where would I hide” “I would have to flee”

10. The last paragraph suggests that Captain Torres is a very keen and clever Captain and knows when to kill and when to not. He can read people clearly, and knows the enormity of what killing means. When he said “They told me that you'd kill me. I came to find out. But killing isn't easy. You can take my word for it.” This indicate that he knows what it means to kill, and that he is a risk taker. He came to the barber shop not knowing if he would survive or not....
