Kelly Jo Stuckey Interview Reflection Business and Professional Communications 24 March 2020

I chose to interview Mayor Noel Harty of Martin County over the phone on March 23, 2020 at 1:30PM Eastern Standard Time. I chose to interview the Mayor because I live in Martin County and his efforts for the community are very admirable. Mayor Noel has worked at Loogootee Municipal Building a little over five years. His leadership and communication skills are an excellent influence in the community. Mayor Noel grew up in Martin County “…watching members of the Shoals Lions Club and Loogootee Optimist Club being active in their perspective communities putting on events, such as the Shoals Catfish Festival and the Loogootee Summerfest.” While looking up to these individuals trying to make a difference in their communities, it made him want to try to do the same. When Mayor Noel took the role of his position there has been a big impact in changes within the community. He obtained his current leadership position in the hotel industry for a short period of time as an employee at the former Red Roof Inn in Montgomery, Indiana. After enjoying his employment there, he took an interest in restaurants. Becoming the night manager for Stoll’s Lakeview Restaurant, Mayor Noel learned a lot in dealing with the public and how to work with a staff of just 50 plus individuals. After 10 years he then decided to also enter the political area

and ran for Township Trustee. In his words, “Township Trustee are all about or should be all about helping thy neighbor.” It was a “tremendous experience” for him and one he will never forget. When asked the question “What makes you an effective leader?” He responded with “I think what makes anyone an effective leader is the ability to listen first and to organize second. If you can do both effectively you can lead!” He goes on to add that he feels part of his success “has been by being transparent and that any leaders’ number one quality should be to be honest and upfront with his constituents.” The most challenging part of his position is the finances because “All Mayors want to be able to fill the needs of their community, but funds always seem to be the number one obstacle.” The most rewarding part of the Mayor position is “seeing projects completed and all the difference you can make in the lives of others!” he adds. I personally feel that Mayor Noel demonstrates great leadership skills because he is an example of what needs to come from other communities that should be brought together. His communication skills are very amazing. When a member of the community reaches out about a concern within the community, he is always quick to respond or act. For example, the Trustee does not always respond to those needing help paying bills. When the individual call the Mayor he instantly acts and gets things done by making sure that the Trustee responds to the individual needing help....
