Introduction There is a diet going around as one of the trend diets that is a lifestyle change this diet is known as the Ketogenic Diet. The Ketogenic Diet is a very low carb and high in fat diet. This diet is very similar to the Atkins diet. The Atkins diet is a diet that consists of high protein and fat and is low in carbohydrates. The Ketogenic Diet is known for weight loss, but with this diet, it becomes a lifestyle change. It has to be a lifestyle change because if you stray off the diet several times it can cause health problems for people such as gout. What is the Ketogenic Diet? A ketogenic diet consists of limiting your carbohydrates and having a diet high in fat. When cutting out carbohydrates drastically out of your diet this is called ketosis. When you cut out carbohydrates from your diet and replace carbs with fats your body now burns fat for energy. When deciding to change your diet to Ketogenic you have to drastically reduce carbohydrates intake, and replace those carbohydrates with fat. With this diet you want to limit your carb consumption to 20-50 grams per day. In this diet, you are also limiting your body of intake of glucose which is another form of energy your body uses. There are different types of Ketogenic diets. One of the ketogenic diets is the standard ketogenic diet this is a very low carb, high fat diet, and moderate protein diet. In this diet, the nutrients you receive are fat -70%, 20% protein, and 10% carbs. The second one is a cyclical ketogenic diet which involves periods of higher carbs days. In this diet, you have 5 days of ketogenic days and the 2 other days during the week consist of high carb days. The third ketogenic diet is the targeted ketogenic diet this diet will allow you to add carbs around your workout days. ketogenic diet. In this diet, you have a higher increase of protein than the standard diet. In this diet the ratio you would receive from nutrients for your body is fat- 60% protein- 35% and carbs5%. During the ketogenic diet, it involves fasting, where you can have food intake for 8 hours during the day and the rest 16 hours you are fasting. Foods to have on Ketogenic The foods you can have on the Ketogenic diet are seafood which are very keto-friendly foods, meat and poultry, and eggs. Other foods you can have are cheeses, avocados, plain Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, and low-carb vegetables. The low-carb vegetables you can have are spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, and radishes. There is food that you do have to avoid while being on this diet. The foods that you have to avoid are sugary foods such as, soda, fruit juice, smoothies, cake, and candy. Some other foods you will have to avoid on this diet are grains such as wheat-based products, rice, pasta, and cereal. Avoiding wheat-based products takes the carbohydrates out of your diet. On this diet you have to cut out fruits as well it has sugar in that food which is not good on the Keto diet but you can have small portions of berries and strawberries. Purpose of the Ketogenic diet The purpose of the Ketogenic diet is to help lose weight and improve your health. The ketogenic diet also has benefits to improve your health against diabetes, cancer, epilepsy, and Alzheimer’s disease. This diet is more effective for long-term weight loss than other weight-loss diets such as low-fat diets. It has been proven people in the ketogenic diet compared to low-fat diet lose 2 pounds more in weight. Patients with diabetes tend to move towards the ketogenic diet because it helps lower blood sugar levels by cutting out sugary foods, when this occurs there is an improved insulin sensitivity by 75%. Conclusion The ketogenic diet has benefits overall for the health and improvement of the health. I thought it was interesting that they are exploring this diet for cancer patients to help slow the growth of tumors. There are many foods that you have to avoid, but when you look at the foods you can have with this diet is what you need on your MyPlate. The ketogenic diet is a good diet to start, it is a lifestyle change as it does change your levels in your metabolism.
