Moki Ndobedi Lab 1

Pick a movie – any movie. Pick an old favorite, sit with one of your kids and watch their favorite, or hit the cinema. If you don’t have any movies at home, check out Hulu (free online movies, although a lot of BAD ones) or your local library. The one movie you can’t choose is something sci-fi that is completely out in space or on an alien world. As you watch your movie, pay attention to the geographic features and how they play into the movie. 1. What movie did you choose? (2 points) I chose to watch Lion King. 2. What’s the basic plot? (2 points) Simba in a Lion who is supposed to be king when he grows older succeeding his father. His uncle kills his father and convinces Simba that the death of his father was on his own hands. His uncle did this so he would be crowned king. Simba runs away eventually returning defeating his uncle and takes his throne. 3. Can you tell where the movie was set by looking at the landscape? (2 points) a. What are your hints? Yes, I know that this takes place in the plains and jungle of Africa. Some of the animals shown in the film are native to Africa. The plains and jungle also hint at it as well. i. Can you see mountains, oceans, open plains? (2 points) Yes, you see open plains and mountains. ii.What type of vegetation is it? (2 points) Dry and warm like a desert. 4. Does the geographic context matter in your movie? Why or why not? (4 points) Yes, it matters because of the animals, as I said earlier the movies has animals that are native to Africa. If the setting where to be Antarctica the animals wouldn’t be able to survive the harsh weather. 5. Let’s set your movie in Vanuatu. How would the movie change? (4 points) Simba's father would have died a different way, he was thrown off mountains, but I do not see any mountains in Vanuatu. 6. Let’s set your movie at the McMurdo station. How would the movie change? (4 points) I mentioned Antartica earlier and mentioned the animals wouldn’t be able to survive in Antarctica's climate. The movie would need to change the characters of their film. 7. So, for you personally:

b. Does geography matter to you? (2 points) I believe it is important, but geography is not anything I am passionate about. c. Do you like hot or cold weather? (2 points) I prefer hot weather. d. What type of landscapes do you like (oceans, mountains, and so forth)? (2 points) I like Islands, mountains, and green plains. They are beautiful sites. e. Why do you live where you live? (2 points) I live in Atlanta, Georgia because of the weather. I lived through harsh winters my whole life....
