Introduction You are allowed to use your books, notes, the models, and even the Internet for this exercise. The purpose of this exercise is to make you more comfortable with the anatomical terminology that we learned in chapter 1 and that we will be using throughout the next two semesters. Keep in mind that some terms may be more appropriate than others for the same answer. For example, if I asked where your nose was located relative to your ears, “medial” would be appropriate, but if I asked which plane divides your nose from your ears, you’d say “sagittal.” Along with your partner, you can use your existing knowledge of the human body or the anatomical models in class to answer these questions. Of course, you are also allowed to use the book and class notes.

Required Materials   

Visible Body’s Human Anatomy Atlas app Articulated skeleton (optional) Whole body anatomy model (optional)

Anatomical Terminology Questions Answer the following questions and turn in your answers for this week’s lab grade. 1. Which plane separates the body into superior and inferior portions? Transverse

2. Which plane separates the body into anterior and posterior portions? Frontal

3. The mouth is located ___medial______________ to the ears.

4. The elbow is located _____proximal____________ to the wrist.

5. The lungs are located ______posterior__________ to the ribs.

1

6. The umbilicus (belly button) is located ___inferior___________ to the sternum. It is located in the ___________umbilical_______ abdominal region.

a. Midsagittal pelvic incision 7. The nose is located ______medial_________ and ________anterior________ to the ears.

8. A scratch wound that does not penetrate the skin is said to be a __superficial_______________ wound. In contrast, a stab wound that penetrates the skin and muscle is referred to as a ____deep____________ wound.

9. The _______cranial___________ cavity encases the brain.

10. The ____abdominopelvic______________ cavity contains most of the reproductive and urinary organs.

11. The _____thoracic_____________ cavity encases the lungs. 12. Fill in the following table with the names of the appropriate abdominopelvic regions (note that right and left refer to the body, not the sides of the page). Right Hypochondriac Region

Epigastric Region

Left Hypochondriac Region

Right Lumbar Region

Hypogastric Region

Left Lumbar Region

2

Right Iliac Region

Hypogastric region

Left Iliac Region

13. The appendix is located in the ______________Lower right______ abdominopelvic quadrant. What abdominopelvic region is this? ___________The left hypochondriac region____________________

14. The spleen is located in the __________upper left____________ abdominopelvic quadrant. What abdominopelvic region is this? _____left hypochondriac region________________________ 15. A patient who was in a knife fight suffered a 2-inch stab wound to his back. The knife entered through the posterior thorax along the midsagittal plane and entered the posterior aspect. What structure in the posterior aspect would have been injured by this wound? The thoracic and vertebrae

16. The urinary bladder is found within the _______________hypogastric____________ region.

17. The _____pericardial_________ cavity contains the heart, and it is surrounded by a membrane called the pericardium ________________________. 18. Name a structure that is located posterior and inferior to the liver. Gallbladder

19. Name a structure that is on the ventral side of the heart, located more laterally within the axial region. Axillary lymph nodes

3

20. Name a structure that is located toward the dorsal side of the body, lateral and superior to the hamstring but inferior to the heart. Note: Transverse sections including this structure would include the pancreas. Kidneys

21. Name a structure that is in the medial part of the body, located inferior to the lungs and posterior to the intestines. Note: A coronal section would contain this structure and the heart, and it is more caudal than the pancreas. Adominal aorta

22. Name a structure that is located cranial to the abdominal cavity, caudal to the neck, and dorsal to the sternum. Cranial structure: Liver Caudual: Lungs Dorsal: Spinal

23. Name a structure that is inferior, appendicular, and very distal. ankle

24. If you are taking an axillary temperature, where would you place the thermometer? Under the armpit

25. If you are testing a patellar reflex, what area are you working on? Kneecap

26. Mental refers to what part of the body? Chin

27. If you sleep on your stomach, you are sleeping in a ______prone_______________ position; whereas if you sleep on your back, you are sleeping in a _______supine______________ position.

4

28. The epigastric region is superior__________________ the stomach, where the hypogastric region is inferior __________________.

29. From our terminology, you would know that the brachial plexus refers to something that has to do with the Forearms________________________.

30. If you are asked to take a buccal swab, which cavity would you swab? cheek

31. An injury to the ear would be described as Otic injury________________________________. 32. If a patient has gotten into a fight and comes into the ER with a fracture to his or her cheekbone, how would you describe that fracture using the regions of the face that we discussed in class. The patient has a fracture zygomatic bone

33. The following picture shows an aneurysm (brain bleed). Looking at the picture and using your terminology, how would you describe the location of the aneurysm? The patient has an aneurysm located in the right temporal lobe

5

34. In the following figure, label the incision location, given each of the following anatomical descriptions: a. Midsagittal pelvic incision b. Left parasagittal thoracic incision c. Transverse abdominal incision

35. Which organs are in the thoracic cavity? the heart, lungs, esophagus, trachea, and the lymphatic

36. Which organs are in the abdominal cavity? Stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys, the abdominal aorta, and the inferior vena cava

37. The wrist would be referred to as Carpal__________________, while the ankle would be referred to as ________tarsals________. 38. In the following image: a. Label the plane it represents in the box at the top of the image b. Add the appropriate labels from the list below:
