BAPTIST COMPETENCIES 2 Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis Leadership Competencies When Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis was first founded, they had less capacity and fewer beds than the present, however, with growth in a healthcare organization comes strengths, weaknesses, and oversights, Located at 6019 Walnut Grove Road in Memphis, Tennessee it was originally founded in 1912. Baptist Memorial Hospital started out with just 150 beds and has grown tremendously over the years to more than 1400 beds (“About Baptist”, 2020). Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis has grown to employ more than 6,000 employees and 500 physicians. The personnel employed at Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis consists of many physicians, nurses, registered nurses, phlebotomist, physician assistants, surgeons, and various specialties. When a patient come through the doors of Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis in need of health care, we are there to help, heal, and assist. Leadership The mission statement for Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis is “In keeping with the three-fold ministry of Christ – Healing, Preaching and Teaching – Baptist Memorial Health Care is committed to providing quality health care” (“About Baptist, 2020). Healthcare leadership at Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis encompasses possessing social skills, communication skills, the ability to resolve conflict, and handle change in a diplomatic manner (Bill T., Midgie, & MindTools Content Team, 2015). Social skills in healthcare leadership are often reflected positively in team-supported projects or healthcare organization missions. Being an Effective healthcare manager for Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis requires possessing emotional intelligence (EI) to be impactful as well as successful within the hospital. Emotional intelligence (EI) can help boost performance and decrease work-related stress because emotional intelligence (EI) brings a humble and human element to healthcare no matter what role or job an individual

It is so important to make patients at Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis feel a connection to their healthcare providers that are responsible for their medical care or the medical care of a loved one as well as the leaders of the hospital. Strengths in leadership are the traits and qualities that serve any leader well by aiding in their ability to lead, manage, and motivate others in an effective manner (Ackerman, 2019). Strength in leadership is not only a helpful skill to possess, but also vital to possess as well as exude to be an effective healthcare manager for Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis. There are many different key strengths that an effective healthcare manager needs to possess to be success. There are multiple lists of various types of leadership and management traits and strengths, but they are all comprised of the same basic attributes such as self-awareness, communication skills, conflict resolution skills, delegating skills, flexibility, emotional intelligence and personal skills like trustworthiness and authenticity. Smart healthcare managers also know how to identify their strengths, how to utilize their strengths, how to maximize their strengths, as well as how to improve upon their own strengths. Healthcare managers are generally happier in the workplace as well as more successful when they play to their own strengths. As a healthcare manager, I would extend my abilities to Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis by teaching and showing employees how to make purposeful efforts to apply their strengths to their work, thus leaving the employee feeling they are effective and efficient in their jobs, which leads to more job satisfaction and quality work (Ackerman, 2019). Strength in leadership and management also brings Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis a competitive edge and advantage in respect to other healthcare organizations. The ultimate success of Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis is due to its long-standing history of strong leaders, in it 107-year history only 5 individuals have held the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) position. The current Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Jason Little was promoted

Baptist’s vision is stated as being the provider of choice by transforming the delivery of health care through partnering with patients, families, physicians, care providers, employers, and payers; and by offering safe, integrated, patient-focused, high-quality, innovative, and cost-effective care (“About Baptist”, 2020). During CEO Jason Little’s introductory period to his new position, there was a healthcare industry-wide upheaval with many challenges due to the Affordable Healthcare Act (Robertson, 2013). Change is often seen as a weakness especially when the change brings about job layoffs within a healthcare organization such as Baptist. CEO Jason Little turned that weakness into a strength by preparing to meet new challenges with lots of new innovation, establishing new physician partnerships to bring a team approach to healthcare, introducing new technologies that will differentiate Baptist in the future, as well as hiring 200 new people at Baptist to facilitate the building of Baptist’s electronic medical record (Robertson, 2013). Turning weaknesses into strengths will surely continue to facilitate in CEO Jason Little’s effectiveness as a leader and Baptist’s success in the healthcare industry as well as support the growth of my career as a healthcare manager and the many others he employs. CEO Jason Little is dedicated to fulfilling the vision of Baptist as well carrying out effective goals, missions and the values set by Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis in its founding as the hospital’s leader. As a healthcare manager at Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis, I realize that in a healthcare organization such as this hospital a team’s success equates to my own success. As a healthcare manager at Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis my ability to lead and aspire as well as develop individuals is critical to my long-term future especially as I ascend the leadership ladder. The success and strength of others achieving key objectives and goals is also critical to my success as a healthcare manager or any leadership position within Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis (DeCosta, 2017).

Team Development1 Teamwork is an essential element to healthcare at Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis. Teamwork is also beneficial in many ways, it encourages rapports between the healthcare providers, staff, and employees at Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis while engaging and connecting them to the hospital. Teamwork is an effective way for Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis to organize and complete their work in an effective manner that results in excellence in care, which can even translate into a competitive advantage (Katzenbach & Smith, 2006). Before team formation can begin, healthcare leaders and healthcare managers must understand the various stages of forming an effective team. Forming a great team not only takes time and patience, but expectations for the new team at Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis should be realistic. Healthcare leaders and healthcare managers cannot expect a new team to perform well when it first comes together (Midgie & Mind Tools Content Team, 2019). The cohesion of teams at Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis is vital to the quality of healthcare the hospital provides. In the hospital, multidisciplinary teams are formed but are only effective when every team member has understanding, belief in the shared purpose, and is willing to work toward the shared common goals of caring and working for a healthcare organization’s patience (Gilkes, 2019). Another important aspect of team development at Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis is uniting the varied generations working within the hospital to help them overcome potential differences so that they have continued success. Different generations may have varied cultural values and traits, team development throughout the hospital is an excellent way for them to connect as well as learn from each other (Gilkes, 2019). Promoting team development within Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis can improve problem solving and morale, which can lead to healthier and happier work environments within the hospital. Team development is guided by healthcare leaders and healthcare management with actions. Displaying the collaborative efforts required to provide quality and satisfactory healthcare services within a healthcare organization, such as Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis (Regis College, 2019). Mentoring. When developing a mentoring program for Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis, I know that there are several key aspects of the potential mentor’s personality to look for, such as enthusiasm, and sincerity. I should understand that their desire to help should be felt in a positive way. I have learned and know that great mentors are passionate about their desire to help others as well as seeing the individuals that they have mentored become successful in whatever they do. As a healthcare manager for Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis it is important for me to know and understand that a good mentor will create a strategy that fits the needs, talents, skills, and desires of the healthcare organization to push towards their ultimate success and not just create a

Good mentors are also described as life-long learners, while realizing that they are experts yet being savvy enough to know that they do not know everything. The developing mentoring program for Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis should have well-established goals such as the benefit of greater productivity, stronger skills, cut losses to the healthcare organization, fewer mistakes on the job, as well as building upon the innovations within the healthcare organization. Good mentors value learning, encourage mentees to step out of their comfort zones, are active listeners, know how to provide feedback, treat other respectfully, and are experts in their field (Loretto, 2019). It is the leaders and managers of Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis’ jobs to develop and perform a thorough selection process for the hospital’s mentoring program ensuring that the individuals chosen to possess the necessary characteristics and skills needed for the ultimate success of the Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis mentoring program. Conclusion. During the course of my studies in this class as well as the classes taken before it and learning about each of the important competencies needed to effectively lead any healthcare organization based upon its goals and mission statement, my knowledge of effective leadership was further strengthened. This course has taught me how to apply the leadership strategies that I have learned to overcome weaknesses and help to improve the overall performance of a healthcare organization like Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis. As a healthcare manager with Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis or any other healthcare organization it is my job to create effective plans, set goals and objectives, make sound decisions, as well as coordinate and evaluate the work of various projects. Also, making sure that success is a continuing process for
