Lecture notes, key points on how insects find mates...

Description

Mate Finding There are two main methods of mate finding using flight, these are:

o Trivial flight- where the insect goes on short flights over small distances in response to vegetative stimuli. o Migration/Dispersal- this is characterised by long distance flights such as the migration of the monarch butterflies over hundreds of miles. The path taken is generally straight and focused on the destination. Migration is described as mass movement from one location to another, whereas dispersal is where individuals fan out separate from each other.

While searching for a mate, insects detect and respond to chemicals, which have different classifications depending on the scenario. o Hormones- chemical messengers within the body

o Semiochemicals- chemical outside of the body.

messengers

The chemicals listed below are all types of Semiochemicals:

o Pheromones- intra-specific messenger chemicals.

o Allelochemicals- inter-specific messenger chemicals.

o Allomones- allelochemicals which are adaptively advantageous to the emitter but not the receiver.

o Kairomones- allelochemicals which are not favourable to the emitter but are advantageous to the receiver. o Synomones- allelochemicals which are advantageous to both the emitter and the receiver.

These chemicals may be referred to as a/an: o Arrestant- which slows linear progress

o Stimulant- increases the rate of activity

o Deterrent- decreases the rate of activity

o Attractant- stimulates oriented movements towards the source of the chemical

Additional key terms: o Repellent- stimulates oriented movements away from the source of the chemical

o Orthokinesis- where chemicals cause a change in the rate of locomotion

o Klinokinesis- where chemicals cause a change in the rate of turning...
