Description

• the needs that effective communication can satisfy; Physical, identity, social, and practical • five insights from the communication model; Sending and receiving messages are usually simultaneous. Meanings exist in and among people. Environment and noise affect communication. (不同的环境会让人们对于这个信息产 生不同的理解) Noise is anything that interferes with the transmission and reception of a message.

 distractions that are outside the receiver that make it difficult to hear. External: (室外鸣笛,刮风...) Physiological noise i n volves biological factors that interfere with reception. (生理 性障碍,眼瞎耳聋) Psychological  noise refers to cognitive factors that lessen the effectiveness of communication. (没专心听)

• five key principles of communication; Communication is transactional. Communication can be intentional or unintentional, as all behavior has communicative value. Communication is irreversible; it is impossible to "unreceive" a message, as words and deeds, once said or done, are irretrievable. Communication is unrepeatable, because the same words and behavior are different each time they are spoken or performed. Communication has a content and a relational dimension. The content dimension involves the information being explicitly discussed, while the relational dimension  expresses how you feel about the other person. • Four m  isconceptions about communication; Not all communication seeks understanding

More communication is not always better, a s excessive communication is unproductive or even aggravates a problem. Communication will not solve all problems, because even the best-timed and best-planned communication cannot fix all problems. Effective communication is not a natural ability, because most people operate at a level of effectiveness far below their potential. 都是错的! • quantitative and qualitative definitions of interpersonal communication; and the characteristics of competent communication. -

Quantitative interpersonal communication- is focused on the number of people involved

-

Qualitative interpersonal communication- occurs when people treat one another as unique individuals, regardless of the context in which the interaction occurs or the people involved. Nature of interaction. Mostly personal.

-

Competent communication- depends on the ability to distinguish facts from inferences. Behaviours that both you and others judge to be appropriate in the situation.

• identify examples of the physical, identity, social, and practical needs you attempt to satisfy by communicating; 1. Physical needs are affected by communication, as its presence or absence affects physical health. (reduce risks of being acholic...) 2. Identity needs are met through communication, which is the major way we learn who we are as humans. Our sense of identity comes from the way we interact with others. (realize yourself as a person, ) 3. Social needs are met through communication, as it is the principle way relationships are created. Communication is the primary goal of human existence. (交朋友,introduce you to larger group) 4. Practical needs are met through communication, as it serves important functions (e.g. tell the stylist how much hair to cut, tell the doctor where it hurts, tell

plumber broken pipe needs to be fixed now, etc.). (大学生找工作based on communication skill)

• demonstrate how the communication model applies to your interpersonal communication;

• describe the degrees to which your communication is qualitatively impersonal and interpersonal

• describe the consequences of this combination;

• identify situations in which you communicate competently and those in which your competence is less than satisfactory. The ability to achieve one’s goals in a manner that is personally acceptable and, ideally, acceptable to others. (Ali getting waxed on arm or leg)

例题: ● When using mediated channels, research indicates a stronger tendency for individuals to demonstrate disinhibition, transmitting a message without considering their consequences. ● We receive and respond to messages from another person at the same time that she or he is receiving and responding to us is an example of the transactional model. ● If you and your friend need to negotiate what “frequently” means when it comes to how often you clean your apartment, this represents that: Meanings exist in and among people. ● Being unable to concentrate on what your mother is saying because you are upset about something that happened with a friend is an example of: psychological noise. ● Commenting on a blog or Facebook update occurs as asynchronous communication....
