Description

Mental Health Case: Linda Waterfall Guided Reflection Questions Opening Questions How did the simulated experience of Linda Waterfall’s case make you feel? I felt good about it, going in I didn’t know much about the medicine bundle. Tht part was sort of confusing for me. Talk about what went well in the scenario. I think I did well with therapeutic communication and knowing what to assess. Reflecting on Linda Waterfall’s case, were there any actions you would do differently? If so, what were these actions and why? I would’ve liked to better educate myself on her culture before entering the vsim so that I wouldn’t have been as clueless. Scenario Analysis Questions* PCC What priority problem(s) did you identify for Linda Waterfall? She was very anxious and it was apparent that the anxiety she had was conflicting with her care in some ways. If the nurse did not recognize or respond appropriately to Linda’s concerns, what could the ramifications be? Since Linda was concerned about going into surgery, not addressing that with her and pushing for surgery would have been unfair to Linda and placed the nurse in a bad place in which she isn’t advocating for the patient. This could be considered negligence and going against the interests of the patient. PCC/I Discuss the importance of a medication bundle for Native Americans. Medication Bundles are traditional for Native Americans, it is a bundle or bag of things that have spiritual significance to the owner. These are belived to protect or give spiritual powers to it owner, this would be especially important during medical procedures because that’s when patients might feel they need the most protection. T&C

What other individuals in addition to the primary care team should be involved in Linda Waterfall’s case?

Linda’s cousin, Alice, seemed to be very important to Linda and should be included. May want to include a medicine man as well if she were interested in that resource. PCC

In Linda Waterfall’s situation, what therapeutic communication techniques would be most effective? Active listening is important with both verbal and nonverbal techniques. Siting with the patient in an open and comforting way (sit facing patient, lean toward patient, eye contact, etc).

Concluding Questions Describe how you would apply the knowledge and skills that you obtained in Linda Waterfall’s case to an actual patient care situation. Anxiety will always be a factor in patient care, majority of the patients in the hospital are experiencing some level of anxiety. Being able to give patients that reassurance and ease their fears/doubts will be a great skill to have. I also want to pay attention to a patients culture and take notice in how that may affect their care.
