Description

Mental Health Case: Linda Waterfall Guided Reflection Questions Opening Questions How did the simulated experience of Linda Waterfall’s case make you feel? I feel like this has been my favorite scenario so far. I could understand why the patient was anxious. I get anxieties too but do not have a specific item that would help me feel less anxious. It was interesting to go through this scenario Talk about what went well in the scenario. The communication between the nurse and the patient was very calm and understanding. The patient had no reason to feel judged by the nurse because the nurse appeared very calm and understanding throughout the scenario. It is an awful feeling to be judged for something that feels so vauluable to you, I’m glad the scenario remained non-judgemental. Reflecting on Linda Waterfall’s case, were there any actions you would do differently? If so, what were these actions and why? I don’t think the Vsim clarified how far away the patient lives, would it be inappropriate to see if the patients cousin was up to picking up the medicin bag for the patient? Linda stated that she likes to listen to music and that it helps her stay calm, there was a recorder sitting behind the patient, I would offer to turn on some music to help her calm down a bit. Scenario Analysis Questions* PCC What priority problem(s) did you identify for Linda Waterfall? She feels too anxious to proceed with the surgery. If the nurse did not recognize or respond appropriately to Linda’s concerns, what could the ramifications be? I think she would’ve left the Hospital angry and upset. There’s no telling if she would feel comfortable but rescheduling the surgery for a later date. If the Nurse’s behavior would end up being judgemental, it could have major impacts on her trusting the healthcare team as a whole. PCC/I Discuss the importance of a medication bundle for Native Americans. This was the first time hearing about a medicine Bundle, as an Immigrant I am not very familiar with the native American culture, but listening to the scenario and doing a little bit of research

online, I can appreciate the importance of the medicine ball. It seems to be very sacred as it contains items that will protect or give spiritual power to its owner. T&C

What other individuals in addition to the primary care team should be involved in Linda Waterfall’s case?

As a Native American, she would probably seek out her Shaman, a healer who is very important to the culture. PCC

In Linda Waterfall’s situation, what therapeutic communication techniques would be most effective? Ask open-ended questions; actively listening to her as she describes her concerns; ask for clarification if concerns aren’t clearly understood and present reflective responses to show interest.

Concluding Questions Describe how you would apply the knowledge and skills that you obtained in Linda Waterfall’s case to an actual patient care situation. I’ve learned how important it is to stay calm when a patient is anxious. Validate the patients feeling and show support. Be there! It can make or break the Nurse-patient relationship.
