Mental Health Case: Linda Waterfall Guided Reflection Questions Opening Questions How did the simulated experience of Linda Waterfall’s case make you feel? I tried to put myself in her shoes and tried to really understand how she would feel; especially having no support system around because they live so far away and having fear of surgery due to her mother passing away from complications of a surgery. Talk about what went well in the scenario. Compared to the last Vsim we did perviously I think I really improved on my therapeutic communication with the client. I also assessed the client well. Reflecting on Linda Waterfall’s case, were there any actions you would do differently? If so, what were these actions and why? I would have probably better informed/educated my self about have cultural background as a native American. Scenario Analysis Questions* PCC What priority problem(s) did you identify for Linda Waterfall? Assessing her level of anxiety and then trying to find out/better understand the causes of those anxieties. This was definitely interfering with parts of her care, so by better understand the cause she help treat that. If the nurse did not recognize or respond appropriately to Linda’s concerns, what could the ramifications be? Linda was very concerned about going to surgery and the complications that could occur. If not addressing this with her occurred and we really started to force the curgery onto her it would have been extremely unfair for linda because we did not listen or appreciate the feelingshe was experiencing. This could be viewed as negligence and really not have the best intention for the patient. PCC/I Discuss the importance of a medication bundle for Native Americans. This is a tradition in the Native American culutre. This medication bundle is a bag of things that have spiritual significance/ meaning to the owner of the bag. The items in the bage are though to protect or give spiritual guidance to its owner . This medication bundle would be especially importance now and during the surgery because Linda is currently feeling nervous and she will

feel especially more vulnerable right before surgery, so this could be used as a coping mechanism and also something that could help with her transition to surgery, as well as protect her during surgery giving good results. T&C

What other individuals in addition to the primary care team should be involved in Linda Waterfall’s case? Linda’s cousin Alice was present during the simulation so linda is most likely ok with having her included in her case and can advocate for what she wants and also help get the cultural needs she desires. We could ask alice what kind of chaplin or mediciman she would like to be brought in to help with her care to accommodate more for her cultural beliefs and practices.

In Linda Waterfall’s situation, what therapeutic communication techniques would be most effective? Active listening including both verbal and nonverbal techniques would be most effective. Siting with the patien is an open an welcoming enviornment can set the tone for the patient to be more willing to open up. This can ensure the patient that her concerns and desires are being actively heard.

Concluding Questions Describe how you would apply the knowledge and skills that you obtained in Linda Waterfall’s case to an actual patient care situation. Being in the hospital is an unfamiliar place and come with unfamiliar situations. Most of the time all patients struggle with some form of anxiety due to this. Being able to attend to these needs and reassure and ease their fears and doubts will be an important skill to have because it extends way beyond an pysch unit.
