Name of Event: US Navy Steel Drum Band 1989 Full Concert Performance date: October 5th, 1989 Time: 6:00pm Location: Independence Hall, Washington D.C.

What did you hear? I mostly hear the steel drums and symbols being smashed together. I also hear a lot of the snare drum and its fast repetitions. One of the steel drums produces a high sound when struck, which stuck out to me. I could also hear, but not as well, the lower sounding drums like the bass drum. The first selection played was called “Amparito Roca” composed by Jaime Teixidor. It sounded more like a celebratory piece than a leisure piece of music. The second piece played by the band was pronounced “Cachita” and it sounded more upbeat and entertaining, like the music you hear at a fiesta. “Mercedes” was the name of the third piece they played and the soldier announcing the name of the song, said it was a song that the nation of Trinidad would most likely play at their festival, Carnival. I heard bongos throughout this piece and it stood out the most to me during the piece. The next piece the band played was similar, as the soldier said, to the one the play at the Kentucky Derby. The name of the piece is “The Gallop”, the band played to make it sound as there were horses galloping along the track, like the beginning of “The Erlking”.

How did you feel about what you heard? The sound of the steel drums made me imagine myself as if I was on a beach in the Caribbean, sitting on the beach. The piece that made me feel like that and I enjoyed the most was “Cachita”. I loved the steel drum and bongo combination in the song. I wish the concert was longer actually so I can hear more of the steel drum. I did not find the concert to be boring, it did go by quickly. The concert went by fast probably because of the upbeat tempo and fast playing notes of the percussion. I also enjoyed “The Gallop” because like the solider said, it’ll make you think you are at the Kentucky Derby. “The Gallop” is one of the main songs that the trumpeter plays at the Derby. I’m a little more biased about this concert because the Navy is performing it and I’m a big supporter of the military. The stage looked very small for band of that size and it looked like the band was packed together too tight. It looked like they were not comfortable, so maybe a bigger stage would have helped them be more comfortable. But overall, I enjoyed the concert very much....
