Description

OSH8150 Discussion 4 I personally found these testimonials difficult to read, I have nurses in my family, and I have friends who are in nursing programs currently. It is awful to think they may be treated this way. They go into this profession because they want to care for people and help people and they are met with this disgusting behaviour. Harassment in any form is completely unacceptable and I think there needs to be a better job at policing these incidents. This is not possible for all cases, as some patients were delirious when these things happened but for those who were not this is completely unacceptable. I visited a relative in the hospital recently and witnessed this behaviour not just to nurses but other hospital staff. There was one visitor (not even a patient) yelling at a nurse for following the COVID rules about visiting patients. A roommate in my relative’s room is constantly yelling demeaning things at nurses of other races and female nurses. Apparently, he is only ever nice and only want to talk to white males (how lovely! I hope my sarcasm comes across there). I know these sort of people exist and sometimes there is not much that can be done but it angers me so much how people can treat others this way. As someone who also works in the form of service industry (coffee not anything important like medical care) I also get harassed by the general public. I have had coworkers of other races be called horrible things and coffee has been thrown. Although this is nothing compared to a pregnant nurse being punched in the stomach for example, I still somewhat understand how hurtful people can be. Overall, I found these stories saddening and infuriating to read. References Our Stories. (n.d.). ONA: Ontario Nurses’ Association.
