Some Guidelines for Outlining
1. Must follow structure given above, including correct format for each level 2. Use full sentences for main pts and sub pts (I, II, III and A, B, Cs) 3. Use sub-points (and lower) to show support. Sub-sub pts often include research to support the sub-pt. 4. Points must be in groups of at least two--no I without an II, no A without a B, etc. If it can’t be broken into two, then it is part of the larger pt. 5. If sentence in outline is more than one line, make sure the line wraps with the same indent as the line above it (should not start at right margin)—like what I did with this point. 6. A really good outline may also include transitions that are internal to the main points (between sub-points) when they are large. For this example, I might have included one between IIA and IIB as there is a lot of info there. 7. As a general rule, include enough detail that anyone could do a speech from your outline. If they can’t, you haven’t included enough details....
