Informative Speech Outline Otakus in NYC

Specific Purpose Statement: New York city is the home of numerous pop culture with massive fan bases and otaku culture is growing rapidly here.

Introduction:

● Attention Getter : The otaku culture in America has been overshadowing American popular culture like the popular American comics of Marvel and DC. ● Thesis Statement : New York city is the home of numerous pop culture with massive fan bases and otaku culture is growing rapidly here. ● Audience Incentive: Anime and manga are highly influential Japanese entertainment media based on the graphic analysis of Japanese art and culture. ● Credibility : The comic book industry in North America is only worth $1.03 billion. The anime industry in America is worth $2.74 billion, twice as much as the comic book industry on the entire North American continent.

Body

I. “Otaku” is a Japanese term for people who have really obsessive interests, generally with anime and manga.

1. Since anime is made in Japan, and heavily influenced by Japanese culture, anime fans

call themselves otaku. 2. Otakus in America do most of the same things that Japanese otaku do. 3. From huge anime conventions to famous manga stores, New York city has a lot to offer to anime fans, aka “otakus”.

II. Otaku community has been increasing rapidly due to the rise in popularity of anime in New York city.

1. Teenagers and young adult New Yorkers cover a massive chunk of the fanbase. 2. It's almost impossible to get any kind of accurate data or evaluation as to how many otaku are out there, in either Japan or other countries. 3. So,it is hard to find out exactly how many people in NYC are otakus and follow otaku culture. III. Otaku culture offers anime conventions, otaku stores that sell anime merchandise, cosplay, visual novels, anime-based games, Japanese music etc. 1. Otakus love to imitate their favorite anime characters, dress up like them and photo shoot which is called cosplay. 2. Every year anime conventions are held in the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, commonly known as the Javits Center in NYC. 3. According to their website, more than 20,000 fans from across NYC, over 30 states, and 10 countries attended the event. Conclusion

The Otaku community is one of the fastest growing communities in New York due to the sudden boom in anime’s popularity. The Japanese pop culture is so famous in NYC for its bizarre trends, and anime and manga are responsible for this. I’m an otaku myself and I have attended two of the big conventions in NYC till now.
