PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action
Therapeutic Use
Complications Headache, pseudomembranous colitis, abdominal pain, diarrhea, hyperglycemia, hypomagnesemia, bone fracture.
Medication Administration PO IM IV
Contraindications/Precautions Hypersensitivity, should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed, discontinue breast feeding, patients using high doses for > 1 year are at an increased risk of hip, wrist, or spine fractures.
Interactions - May decrease absorption of drugs requiring acid PH. - May increase risk of bleeding with warfarin. - Hypomagnesemia increase risk of digoxin toxicity.
Nursing Interventions - Assess patients routinely for epigastric or abdominal pain and for frank or occult blood in stool, emesis, or gastric aspirate. - May cause abnormal liver function tests, including increase AST, ALT, alk PHOS, and bilirubin. - Monitor bowel function
Client Education
Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness - Decrease in abdominal pain heartburn, gastric irritation and bleeding in patients with GERD may require up to 4-week of therapy. - Healing in patients with erosive esophagitis. Therapy is continued for up to 8 weeks.
- May be given with or without food. Do not break, crush, or chew tablets - Advise patient to avoid alcohol, products containing aspirin or NSAIDs, and foods that may cause an increase in GI irritation. - Advise pt to report onset of black, tarry stool, diarrhea or abdominal pain to HCP promptly.
