Expected Pharmacological Action Binds to an enzyme in the presence of acidic gastric pH, preventing the final transport of hydrogen ions into the gastric lumen.
Therapeutic Use Diminished accumulation of acid in the gastric lumen, with lessened acid reflux.
Complications Diarrhea, flatulence, abdominal pain. CNS: headache, insomnia. Skin: rash.
Medication Administration PO 40 mg with meals
Contraindications/Precautions Hypersensitivity to rabeprazole or related drugs (benzimidazoles);
Nursing Interventions Risk for infection (Adverse Reaction)
Interactions May ↓ levels of atazanavir and nelfinavir; avoid concurrent use with either of these antiretrovirals. May ↓ absorption of drugs requiring acid pH Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness Surpres gastric acid secretion by inhibiting the acid (pronton H+) pump in the parietal cell.
