PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action may affect transportation of amino acids across and stabilize neuronal membranes
Therapeutic Use decreased incidence of seizures; decreased postherpetic pain; decreased leg restlessness
Complications confusion, depression, dizziness, drowsiness, sedation, anxiety, hypertension, abnormal vision, weight gain, anorexia, flatulence, paresthesia
Medication Administration 300 mg 3x daily
Contraindications/Precautions hypersensitivity may increase suicidal thoughts use lower dose with renal impairment
Nursing Interventions monitor for notable changes in behavior that indicate worsening of suicidal thoughts or behavior or depression; assess seizures, restless leg syndrome(location, duration)
Interactions antacids may lower absorption increased risk of CNS depression may lower hydrocodone levels
Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness decr. frequency of or cessation of seizures increased modd stability decr postherpetic neuralgia pain decr effects of restless leg syndrome
