Description

Phil 1404- Ethics and Social Responsibility Instructor: Professor Cynthia Donnelly Name: Anonymous Date: September 9, 2020 Written assignment unit 1

This written assignment asks us to answer quite a few questions regarding the Equifax data breach. I am going to answer one question at a time in separate little paragraphs. Question one: which elements of this case might involve issues of legal compliance? 

The main aspect of the Equifax data breach that was not legal was that hackers gained unauthorized access to people’s personal information (Byars, S.M., & Stanberry, K, 2019, Chapter 1). If the hackers never were able to access the content, there never would have been a data breach.

Question two: which elements illustrate acting legally but not ethically? 

The Equifax company sold a bunch of their stock after finding out about the hack. (Byars, S.M., & Stanberry, K, 2019, Chapter 1). This was not ethical because they were able to profit from the breach of data.

Question three: what would acting ethically and with personal integrity in this situation look like? 

In order to be ethical, Equifax should have told their clients about the data breach. This could have prevented the Equifax company from being sued due to the hack. Another thing that would have helped would have been if the managers were held responsible. The company pretty much said that their company did not do anything wrong.

Question four: how do you think this breach will affect Equifax’s position relative to those of its competitors? 

I think the breach will negatively affect Equifax’s position compared to their competitors. People will realize that Equifax is not a trustworthy company and they will start trusting other companies. Noone wants their data to be accessed by unauthorized users.

Question five: how might it affect the future success of the company? 

The data breach will definitely affect the future success of the company. They will need to prove to their customers that they can protect their privacy. If people cannot trust Equifax, than they will start migrating towards other companies, like Transunion.

Question six: was it sufficient for Equifax to offer online privacy protection to those whose personal information was hacked? 

Yes, it was good for those people to get online privacy protection. It will show that Equifax is trying to resolve that issues that have occurred due to the data breach.
