UNIT 1: Introduction to Business Communication

Written Assignment Unit 1 University of the People BUS 1105 - Business Communications Mr. Cory Brunson February 2, 2022

UNIT 1: Introduction to Business Communication Describe the five contexts of communication and at least one example of each. 1. Intrapersonal Communication: This is a type of communication done within yourself, and a foundation of how you project yourself to others. Intrapersonal communication involves self-concept, inner thoughts, perception, and self-reflection within yourself. Good examples would be when you write your new year resolution, plans, or a written assignment, you communicate with yourself, gather your thoughts and visualize the goal, which is called Intrapersonal communication (Lustigman, 2020).

2. Interpersonal Communication: Interpersonal communication is basic communication to build any relationships with

2 others. It involves interactions and exchange of ideas and/or information between two or more people as opposed to Intrapersonal communication. The level of intimacy in Interpersonal communication can vary from personal to impersonal such as the communication between an employer and an employee, a customer and a store cashier, and a girlfriend and a boyfriend. A typical example is communication between you and your spouse/partner. (Lustigman, 2020).

3. Group Communication: Group communication generally refers to the communication done in a small group of people who are likely to share common interests, educational background, age, sex, community, and so on. An example would be communication between you and your friends from high school, and your coworkers in the same project team (McLean, 2010).

4. Public Communication: Public Communication is purposeful communication to convey ideas and information addressing a group of people on a specific topic. The speaker is one person and the group is attentively paying attention to the messages delivered by the speaker. A seminar, public speaking, standup comedy are good examples (McLean, 2010).

5. Mass Communication: Mass Communication is defined as the process of information distribution to a mass anonymous audience in different locations and impersonal communication done via mass media such as broadcast TV, Radio, and social media for example. The sender/speaker is usually a representative of an organization (McLean, 2010).

Describe which context appealed to you the most and the least. Group Communication is the most appealing to me, especially when face-to-face interaction is difficult and limited these days due to Covid spread. As a married person with kids, I am blessed to have a frequent chance to engage in interpersonal communication with my family at home. However, I also miss Group communication with my friends, where we engage with each other enjoying in-person gatherings and mutual hobbies so it’s a valuable social communication context to me these days. The least appealing one is Mass Communication as it addresses the anonymous audience and not necessarily my personal interests or needs. It is usually distributed regardless of the desire of recipients to receive it and the messages are usually impersonal so I sometimes find it annoying. References Lustigman, A. (2020, November 16).
