Description

Family matters Introduction: I’ve been assigned the notion Idea of progress. First, I’d like to define the notion. For me the Idea of progress expresses an improvement over time for various situations. The progresses are supposed to make the world a better place. The subject of family matters illustrates the notion to the extent that society has become more tolerant towards kinds of lifestyles that were considered, in the past as bad, unusual or unacceptable, which constitutes a progress. We can wonder How family life has been impacted by the stereotypes of a “typical family” among the society. In order to answer to this question, we are first going to analyse the made-up myth of the 50s typical family. Then, we are going to talk about the victims of social oppression. Finally, we will deal with the effects of today’s tolerance.

Plan: I-

The myth of the 50s typical family

a) The creation of the myth and its influence b) The real family life in the 50s

II-

The victims of that system

a) Women’s condition b) Interracial couples. c) LGBT+ community

III-

The effects of today’s tolerance

a) What’s accepted? b) The limits

Details:

I-a) The image of the typical 1950s family that comes to all of our minds is just a myth, it has been made up (mostly by television). I-b) What we bas ourselves on is false. In the 50s, parents used to co-run everything, from money earning to household chores. II-a) Women have been oppressed by a masculine-made society, being assigned many tasks way beyond normal. Moreover, the system is not adapted to them. II-b) Interracial couples have been facing outrages and judgement from society ever since it became legal in 1967 and even more so before that. Being mixed-race is hard for the children. II-c) LGBT+ community suffered a lot of discrimination and only begins to be tolerated, 20 years ago, same sex marriage was forbidden in nearly the entire world. III-a) Women can blossom in their family life as in work life thanks to the balanced parenting. LGBT+ are recognised and getting more and more rights. Interracial couples tend to be more accepted. III-b) Social pressures still apply to a lot of people, in some places not very open-minded. Society and infrastructure are not completely adapted to women....
