RESEARCH UNIT 4 Alex, the parrot who displayed unimaginable intelligence Although his brain was no bigger a walnut, Alex the African gray parrot could do more than speak and understand — he could also count, identify colors and, according to his owner Irene Pepperberg, develop an emotional relationship. When Alex died in September 2007, his last words to Pepperberg were "You be good. I love you."

than

In her new book, Alex & Me, Pepperberg explores the world of animal cognition and describes her unique relationship with Alex. Pepperberg is adjunct professor at the Department of Psychology at Brandeis University and a lecturer and research associate at Harvard University. She is also the author of The Alex Studies. How would Alex say goodbye? Pepperberg says that she imagines it would sound something like what Alex would say to her every night before going to bed: You be good. I love you. See you tomorrow.

Comment:

Alex was a well-known parrot that revolutionized the study of birds and whose abilities were unbelievable. Alex was part of the Pepperberg studies for over 30 years. The goal of this project was to prove the parrot's cognitive development and that he acted with full awareness. The parrot showed that he could correctly identify different characteristics of distinct objects. For instance, Alex recognized different types of keys, even when their qualities varied. Also, In the article, we found out more unique skills of Alex, who managed to understand and speak an impressive number of words. Furthermore, He even had the capacity for reasoning compared to that of a child aged five years. From this perspective, it is a fact that their mental performance and ability to communicate changed the way scientists and the public viewed animal intelligence.

Unit Introduction 2

Life in Peru in the year 3000 Homeland. Peace. Technology. These three words come to mind when describing my life in Peru in the year 3000. Because of the many extraordinary things I'm relishing now. For instance, I went sightseeing to the landscapes of Huancavelica, which is one of the 24 wonders of the world. Also, I attended a conference last month in Cerro de Pasco, which is by far one of the world's major mining powers. Although it was boring, I liked it a lot because I visited the stadiums where the Peru 3005 World Cup will be held. My life has been a complete sequence of unthinkable situations that are completely hard to believe in many aspects. First of all, Careers in Peru became so uncertain for the vast majority. Because of the times we live in, people got bored and switched careers frequently. Although, this provides incentives for further economic growth in different majors. I can say that because I've changed professions many times and have witnessed how this contributed to the economic productivity of my country. Compared to before, when having a single career was more than enough in the workplace. However, you can feel in the work environment the youthful talent and ideas of young workers. The second point is the House's where nowadays Peruvians live. Due to the time, we have been living today. Peruvian people live in exotic places such as mountain areas, the sky, or even the snowcapped Huascaran. All this is possible due to the extensive development of technology in our country. Furthermore, some greedy Peruvians have thousand-story houses in every province of Peru. Compared to before, when one could barely have a 3-story building. Despite everything, one can feel the fresh scent of freedom to live as one desires. The third point is that Longevity in Peru has changed a lot throughout the years. In this decade, Peruvians are the people who tend to live the longest in the world at around 500 years. Compared to before, when we didn't even pass the age of 70. The ages regarding puberty or the perfect age to get married have undergone so many changes. Due to that, age practically doesn't matter anymore. I can still hear the scream of people living their youth at the age of 250. To conclude. As a final thought, I can hardly believe everything that has changed in Peru in the last few years. Besides, I'm aware of all the changes that have taken place in our lives. In spite of all the changes, Peruvians can learn from the customs of the past but not live in it. Only in this way will we adapt to the following developments a world power.

Unit introduction 3

MY EXPERIENCE VOLUNTEERING Have you ever volunteered? Let me tell you about my experience volunteering. For instance, I used to go every weekend to a nearby church where I was impressed by how the catechists would willingly help needy people. On a unique occasion, they invited me to volunteer in a faraway place called Pamplona. That was when I discovered the rewarding experience of helping others without receiving anything in return. After volunteering several times, I found my vocation and realized how the focus of my life changed radically. My experience in volunteering has been a series of largely satisfying and unique events that are completely hard to believe in many aspects. First of all, let me tell you in detail about my first volunteer experience. When we arrived in Pamplona, many people looked at us strangely. It was a region where people lived in extreme poverty because they were affected by several natural phenomena such as landslides and droughts. Although it was complicated at first, we started to carefully bring down the groceries for the people in a nearby church. Then, we did a series of shows where quite a few children came, and just seeing a smile on their faces was more than enough for me. After the show, we proceeded to deliver the groceries for each of the people. When we were leaving, people said goodbye to us in a very grateful and respectful way. I will never forget that experience because I was so glad to know that I was acting right. Then I experienced other occasions volunteering in different ways in nearby churches. There was one occasion we organized an early Christmas for children with health problems in medical centers. My eyes were full of tears when I saw how happy the children were and how they never lost hope. Also, on other occasions, we visited a nursing home where we helped and spent pleasant moments with the elderly. This experience, apart from being very rewarding, left me with great life lessons. To conclude. As a final thought, I can hardly believe everything I've experienced so far volunteering. Besides, I also feel that we are the ones who should be grateful because the people we help show us great teachings that were impossible to see before. Furthermore, I believe that volunteering is the best way for people to understand each other. All in all, as far as I'm concerned, volunteering teaches you more things than you can imagine.

WRITING #1 FINAL DRAFT

EXTREME PERCEPTION AND ANIMAL INTELLIGENCE There are different perceptions of intelligence in animals which authors such as Temple Grandin and Catherine Johnson define how animals can solve problems in a variety of conditions. The first point is the way in which some animals can read human behavior by observing signs that only they could recognize. In the article, we found that some Dogs and Clever Hans were believed by many to be displaying unique intelligence. This was able because they have the cognition that allows them to recognize a sign and then choose a voluntary decision to achieve something about it. One fact is that both show an astonishing understanding of the environment that allows them to make decisions about it. From this perspective, it’s believed that animals who have the approach to know how to read the different situations presented to them, and then make decisions about it are showing a category of high intelligence.

MY LIFE IN 2175

My life in the year 2175 Amazement. Longing. Technology. These are the three words that come to mind when describing my life in the year 2175. Because of the many astonishing things, I'm living now. For instance, I went to Saturn last week to see some business. Also, I attended a conference last month on a new planet called “Kazutora”. Although it was interesting, I didn't like it because we didn't visit the "Kong" galaxy. My life has been a complete succession of unimaginable things that are completely hard to believe in many aspects.

Mar I got m three tim First, Marriage ultimately became so insufferable for the vast majority. Because of I got d the times we live in, divorce has become a daily occurrence. In addition, loveless three tim marriages are becoming more and more common. I can say that because I got married three times, and I got divorced three times too. It is utterly impossible to find a loving person who loves you in these times where technology is more important than anything else. Compared to before when love was the ultimate and awesome experience one could have. The second point is that Longevity has changed a lot throughout the years. In this decade, people used to live almost 400 years like before when we didn't even pass the age of 80. The ages regarding puberty or the perfect age to get married have undergone so many changes. Due to that, age practically doesn't matter anymore. I can still hear the scream of people living their youth at the age of 250. The third point is that Family also has changed a lot. Due to the time, we have been living today. The Family has extended to the point that most of them know up to their 10th generation. Some even establish a loving relationship within the Family. Despite everything, you can still feel the feeling of a true family. The amazing thing is that I have families in huge distant galaxies that we are going to visit once every 10 years because of the time it takes to travel. To conclude. As a final thought, I can hardly believe everything I have experienced so far. Besides, I'm aware of all the changes that have taken place in our lives. Despite all the changes, we can learn from the customs of the past but not live in it. Only in this way will we be able to adapt to the following changes in our lives since in so many years that we have left to live we will learn moe and become better people.
