Description

Math 230 Preliminary Syllabus Instructor: Tyler Gaona E-mail: [email protected] TA: Thesath Nanayakkara E-mail: [email protected] Textbook: Essential Calculus Early Transcendentals 2nd edition by James Stewart. You will automatically be charged for and given access to the e-book and WebAssign through the Inclusive Access program. You are not required to use this program. You should have received an email from RedShelf entitled “Important Information – Digital Course Materials Charge and Opt Out Policy” with details on how to access the material or opt-out of the program. Your Responsibilities: - Check Canvas and your Pitt email regularly for new material and announcements. Since the course will be mostly asynchronous, it will be up to you to take the initiative to keep up with the material. - In lieu of live lectures, I will regularly post videos to our Canvas explaining concepts and showing problem solving examples. I expect you to use these videos as a tool to understand the course content and prepare for homework assignments, quizzes, and exams. - We will use LonCapa for homework assignments. You can access it by going to the link homework2.phyast.pitt.edu and logging in with the same credentials you use to log into my.pitt.edu. In addition you should try enough exercises from the book until you are comfortable with the concepts and techniques presented in the course videos. - Short quizzes will be given on a weekly basis, excluding weeks in which we have exams. You will have 24 hours to complete the quiz. I will post the quizzes on Canvas and you will upload your solutions to Gradescope. Thesath will grade the quizzes. - We will have two midterm exams and a comprehensive final. They will be open book and open notes. I will make clear what you can and cannot use as a reference when taking the exam. There will be a time limit and you will upload your solutions to Gradescope. Tentative dates for the midterm exams are June 9th and July 10th, though I am willing to be flexible and work with your schedules. I will grade the exams. - I would like to have live meetings through Zoom once a week. Here you will have the opportunity to ask questions as in office hours and see additional examples worked out. I will inquire as to your availability and choose a time that accommodates as many students as possible. I will be available by appointment for additional office hours. The secret word is “tangerine”. How you will be evaluated (Grading): LonCapa Problems: 15% Quizzes: 15% Midterms: 20% each Final: 30% Details: You can expect me to curve the homework grades and drop (at the least) your lowest quiz score. I may or may not apply a curve to the exams....
