Proposal Memo To: Aritzia Human Resource Team From: Fanny Chui Subject: Proposal to Address Hiring Need Date: February 1st, 2017 Introduction For this year’s upcoming annual Aritzia warehouse sale, I am recommending new ways to solve the hiring need. As a current employee and a second-year human resources student at Kwantlen University, I look forward to applying my relevant experiences for this project. The anticipated project start day is March 1st 2017 and will end July 25th 2017. In that time, I will research effective and cost-friendly ways to recruit, hire and train over 75 employees. Background and Goals There are numerous temporary positions to be filled for the annual warehouse sale. Cashiers, associates, supervisors, LP, cleaners, line control etc. Hiring temporary workers at a largea large quantity of workers is hard workdifficult. More than 50,000 shoppers come by the highly anticipated warehouse sale each year. Some shoppers even line up the night before the event just to get in as soon as we open. It is crucial that effective and productive employees are hired during this period to ensure a profits are maximized and customers leave happy.

Multiple challenges are presented when it comes to hiring temporary workers. It is crucial that we do not take any shortcuts in hiring, especially for temporary workers (Tolan, 2012). Starting early is important so that we can have as much time as needed to prepare for the mass hiring and training of these new workers. According to Gilder (2003), “Contingent workers showed lower commitment to the team and to the organization, and displayed less favourable workrelated behaviours than core employees” (p. 588). Creating a plan for training and orientation that shows our organizational culture will be sure to change that. The purpose here is to fill these positions with reliable workers and train them to the best of their abilities in a short time period.

Proposal I am going to research the most effective way of hiring reliable and efficient temporary workers. With the reading and research done I will begin my recruitment. Recruitment through external and internal outlets. Time will be taken to carefully screen and select hopeful applicants. Screening measures include phone interviews and face-to-face interviews. More

research will be done in creating training sessions that are engaging and effective. Training and onboarding will be tailored to the company’s needs and ensure that our temporary workers understand Aritiza’s culture even if their time here is not permanent Method My method of research will be primarily secondary research. A lot of research will be done through reading academic journals about temporary work, hiring effective workers, training and orientation practices. With the accumulated knowledge, I will be able to develop my own standards to hiring contingent workers and set training standards. Schedule, Costs and Budget The table below outlines the anticipated cost of my research and time. I will work at my current hourly rage $14/hour for this project. There will also be a need to fill my current position. I currently work a 25-hour work week and during the project I will be unable to work. DATE

Staffing and Qualifications For the past year that I have worked at Aritzia, I have quickly caught on to the company’s organizational culture. It is crucial to have somebody understand the company’s unique structure when hiring. Most of our top level positions are hired internally because our people know best. Currently majoring in human resources, I have taken numerous courses relevant to hiring the right people and effective training practices. This project gives me the opportunity to develop and practice my human resources skill. As well I have attended the sale annually for years now and I am familiar with the environment. I have observed what the needs are in such event. Benefits Having an internal employee with experience in Aritzia’s environment is an advantage for this project. I know how the organization works and what the priorities are. The biggest objective is to maximize sales. It is not easy to find the best temporary people without compensating any important qualities. Putting together an effective team during this event will ensure Aritzia gets to maximize profits. With the extensive research and effort put into this project, there is a guarantee for a great year at the warehouse sale. Authorization Please let me know before the end of February if you would like this project to begin via email or phone call. This proposal is valid until February 28th, 2017. I am looking forward to working with you. Thanks for the submission, Fanny. You added in some components that are more suited for an implementation report. For this project, you research the best hiring practices and then submit the criteria required for Aritzia. Marking Criteria Paragraph organization
