Promotion Prospects...

Description

The meaning of promotion prospects is the chance or prospects an employee has for promotion or gaining a better position. In the area of gender equality, the promotion gap for women still exists nowadays. Some researchers have pointed out such imbalance. Take the United States as an example, across the nation, women comprise 47% of the workforce. While women make up 40% of managers at companies, only 20% reach the top spot of CEO. (Wallask, 2020) Here are some steps that companies can take to enhance the promotion prospects for females. 1. Establish unbiased performance evaluation mechanisms. Some researchers have mentioned that women are not promoted because managers underestimate their potential, which is due to the gaps in mechanisms of evaluation. (Shue, 2021) For example, in some companies, managers use a “nine-box” grid to evaluate their employees, giving them a low, medium, or high score on their performance over the prior year and a low, medium, or high score on their potential for growth and development. The higher the score, the more likely the employees are to be promoted. However, the commonly talked factors that influence the potential are characteristics such as assertiveness, execution skills, charisma, leadership, ambition, which are highly subjective. Due to this, compared with male employees, females will more likely get lower scores because of the bias. Therefore, the establishment of fact-based evaluation mechanisms is essential. Managers should remove the highly subjective evaluation factors and focus on realistic performance such as volume of sales in a particular period, economic benefits form conclusion of contracts and so on.

2. Introduce induction programs to the employees Induction program aims to help the employees to settle into their position at a new company, business, or organization. Besides, it’s also important to guide new employees in the organization to provide lots of benefits. Induction program could help to boost the confidence level of the employees, especially female employees. Some of the things that are need to be included in induction program are introduction to the business and other important structures; overview of company’s visions, cultures, and values; roster or work schedule;

and tools of trade, like keys, name badge, and swipe card. In most cases, the company will ask the senior employees to guide the juniors. 3. Achieve buy-in from the senior team member Buy-in means willingness of actively support and participate in something, specifically when there’s a new plan or policy proposed by the seniors. Generally, the responsibilities and roles of a company or organization will usually start from the top to the bottom level, which is from the seniors to juniors. In order to create a better work culture and environment, buy-in process is indeed important to propose by the senior level. So, by accepting, supporting, and achieving the buy-in process proposed, it could be a way to increase the promotional and growth of the female employees.

4. Provide opportunities to develop It’s not a surprise that the employees who get the opportunities which able to help them learn, develop, and advance their skills will most likely to stay in the company. None of the company would want to lose the talented employees. So, it’s very important to provide the employees with opportunities, so they will be more all-rounded and better skilled at every factor of the jobs. In addition, by training and development, it will help to increase their confidence level and performance in the company.

5. Explore the working practices It’s very crucial to maintain the balance between personal and professional life of the employees, especially females. Working practices refer to the execution of specific duties and tasks related to the job descriptions. A good working practice could help the employee to stay motivated everyday and create some good habits. Standing from the company’s side, there are some things that the company can do to support their employees, such as providing a clear expectation, supporting the team, ensuring that the employees are comfortable at work, encouraging them to learn and develop, and getting involve in decisions.
