PSY-357 – Lifespan Development Topic 5 – CLC-Media Portrayal of Adolescence Directions: This is a CLC assignment. Each member of the group will watch a television show in which an adolescent(s) is a main character of the show. Watch at least three episodes of a season. After watching the episodes, answer the following questions to guide you in your CLC discussion. Remember to share which show you will be watching so your colleagues do not watch the same show.

1. List the name of program watched and the year(s) each originally aired. The tv show that I watched is “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” and it aired in 20082013.

2. Describe how adolescents were characterized in the program. The main adolescents were characterized as reckless. The adolescents have to face many issues that teens should not be facing until there are adults. Some of the adolescents were characterized as responsible but still do careless acts.

3. Were the characterizations positive or negative? Explain. The characterizations were negative because they were characterized as reckless. The main character Amy was known as a heart warming girl who recklessly gets pregnant after a one night stand at band camp. Throughout the show Amy is not seen as the heart warming girl she was know as before but now known as the girl who got pregnant at 15 and starts to act careless.

4. Did the characterizations represent stereotypes we have for adolescents? I think that the characterizations represent some of the stereotypes we have for adolescents. Common stereotypes about adolescents are that they are lazy, irresponsible, shallow, and concern for what is going on in the world. I think that the stereotype of them being irresponsible was represent in the characterizations.

5. Would these adolescents be positive role models for younger children? I don’t think that these adolescents are positive role models for younger children. In this show there is teen pregnancy, sexual content as teens, and teen marriage. Younger children may seen this as a normal thing that they can do when they shouldn’t.

6. Are the issues of adolescence accurately portrayed? I think that are some adolescence accurately portrayed. Not all adolescence are reckless and getting pregnant at a young age and getting married in high school.

7. If you watched a show that originally aired in different years, did you notice a difference in the portrayal of adolescence? Explain the differences you saw. I remember that around that time there were many shows that showed teen pregnancy and there a difference from the show that are on tv now. Now you don’t see many shows with teen pregnancy and teens being reckless like that. Tv shows now are more about drama, comedy, and mystery....
