Speech on tanning beds...

Description

Alivia Jakab Effective Oral Persuasive Speech 8 March 2014 Outline Specific Purpose: I want my audience to be persuaded to not use tanning beds. Attention Getter: I can almost guarantee that everyone in this room has gotten a tan before, and I am going to infer that most of the girls in here have used a tanning bed at least once. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, indoor ultraviolet (UV) tanners are 74 percent more likely to develop melanoma than those who have never tanned indoors. Credibility: I have tanned in tanning beds before, and I know how hard it may be to stop because when you’re tan, you automatically feel better about yourself. Thesis: Users of tanning beds are consciously choosing to increase their odds of cancer, but with appropriate education this could be stopped. Enumerated Preview: Tanning beds are causing health problems, such as cancer, all over the world, and until people are more informed about the risks, the use of tanning beds will never stop. Body I. Ever since a tan was the sign of health and liveliness back in the day, we have been battling the culture of society about the dangers of sun damage to our skin. A. Whether you get a tan on the beach, or in a tanning bed, it is bad news, any way you look it. Tans are caused by harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning lamps, and if you have one, you’ve sustained skin cell damage. 1. No matter what you may hear at tanning salons, the damage caused by UV radiation can lead to premature skin aging such as wrinkles, lax skin (Skin lacks elasticity and hangs in loose folds), brown spots, as well as skin cancer. 2. The IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) reports cited research showing that tanning is especially hazardous to young people; those who use sunbeds before age 30 increase their lifetime risk of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, by 75 percent. Transition: Now let me explain why this problem is relevant B. Importance of the problem

1. Sunlamps and tanning beds promise consumers a bronzed body year-round, but the ultraviolet (UV) radiation from these devices poses serious health risks. 2. In the Doctor Oz Show website published in 2014, an article written by Susan Evans, stated that, “Teens are at special risk because their bodies are undergoing such accelerated growth rates that their cells are more prone to the damage of the UV radiation. By routinely tanning their skin starting at a young age, teens put themselves at greater lifetime risk of developing skin cancer. Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to get a sunburn in a tanning bed, and your eyes are at an increased risk of developing cataracts and corneal burns.” Transition: Now let’s talk about what will happen if the problem is not addressed. C. According to, LivingStrong.com studies indicate that people who suffer from tanorexia (the obsessive desire to tan) display the same addictive behavior as smokers or people with other addictive habits. There is no point where the person reaches a goal of tan’ness. It's an elusive point they strive for, with no end in sight. 1. If the use of tanning beds continues, the percentage will increases causing users to be 87% more likely to develop melanoma than those who have not. 2. If people do not stop tanning, the amount of cancers due to tanning beds is going to continue to rise. If these statistics do not stop people from tanning, I’m not sure what will. Transition to Solution II. In order for the use of tanning beds to stop, drastic measures need to be done in order to enforce laws against it. A. Back in May 2013, the Food and Drug Administration issued a proposal in hopes of raising consumer awareness over the health side effects of tanning bed lamps. The FDA’s proposal looked to move products containing sunlamps from class I low risk devices to class II moderate risk devices. 1. The dangerous levels of UV radiation emitted by tanning beds is said to be 10 to 15 times higher than midday sun rays. 2. Some states have passed or are considering passing laws making it illegal for children and teens to use tanning beds, or to use them without their parent or guardian being present; normally have to be 18 to sign without a parent. Transition: Now let’s see what will happen if we adopt this proposal B. The number of health risks will go down drastically if people stop using tanning beds 1. Even though we will all be pale, our skin will be so much healthier and fresher

2. Society is ugly, but so is being so tan that you are orange. Conclusion: For the use of tanning beds, the cons clearly outweigh the pro’s. Appeal: By tanning in a tanning bed, you are literally laying there for ten to twenty minutes, asking to become a victim of cancer. Concluding Remarks: Pale is the new tan, and I hope you all can embrace your natural skin. Hopefully you all have gained knowledge from this presentation and you stop tanning, and educate your family and friends to stop too!
