Kensha Secrease Professor Ifakolade Sbs 318 - 17 5 November 2018 The 13th Questions 1) The 13th documentary characterizes our criminal justice system as a new technique to control black and brown individuals. Since the 13th amendment ended slavery, punishment for unlawful crimes was a way for the government to get free labor out those found guilty. People of color make up the majority of the population in our criminal institutions. In essence, the institutions are a new form of slavery. 2) Before watching the 13th documentary, I was aware of how the government puts mandatory minimum sentencing on certain drug charges. I am not surprised about the racial underpinnings of this certain legislative policy. If the government once enslaved African Americans for no reason at all; it is not hard for the government to lock people of color up for a crime they committed. It is a way for the government to continue to degrade people of color in America. 3) This quote does not surprise me; It is despondent yet it reassures me that racism does exist in America. White people believe that their own race is superior to others. Therefore, White Americans do whatever it takes to stay on top of the minorities. Nixon’s remark shows that society needs for African Americans to remain inferior in America. Just like other White Americans, Nixon is only worried about the well being of himself. Regardless of Nixon’s 4) Growing up in Oakland, I have witnessed many close friends and family members experience being arrested and/or incarcerated. Oakland is claimed to be one of the most dangerous places in America. Instead of me being scared of dangerous gang bangers; I am more afraid of the police officers. Being here at this college in Los Angeles makes me grateful for making it out. I am only fearful of my little brother one day being caught up in a situation with the police. I know they will lock him up without asking any questions. 5) The fear of Black men is real. White people are trained to call the police whenever a Black person makes them feel unsafe. The media also purposely showcases Black men as thugs and gang bangers to further characterize them as criminals. Based upon a darker skin color an individual looks more aggressive and therefore they are feared. 6) Prior to seeing this film, I was not aware of the corporate interest group ALEC. I know that interest groups exist and their purpose is to influence the government because I am a political science major. It was surprising to know that this ALEC group exists for state delegates to use already written laws. I do not think delegates should support ALEC because they are not thinking for themselves. Sometimes, they just copy and past the law and it might not even benefit their own state’s constituents....
