REFLECTION

Description The experience I will reflect on was providing care for patient with complex wound using my Aseptic Non-Touch Technique (ANTT) Wound Dressing. In week 7 of my NPP2201 workshop, I was able to performed a chronic wound dressing on a patient with stage 3 left buttock ulcer sore. I had to demonstrate all the elements required for effective ANTT dressing. I went to the treatment room where I collected all my equipment such as clean trolley, ANTT pack, dressing pack, gloves, hand gel, saline and patient’s care plan. I read the patient’s treatment plan prior to performing my assessment with my tutor. I first assessed the wound, Pt wound tissue was pink, depth 4cm by 4cm, no odour, wound was red and inflamed, there was little discharge. Pt complained of pain when I touched the surrounding area of the wound.

Feelings I was really nervous by the size of the wound; however, I was confident with my wound dressing techniques. I have had previous experience from my pasted clinical placements. I understand that my preconceived ideas about wound dressing was mainly about the experience of aseptic technique, learning skills and communicate effectively with nursing team and other multi-disciplinary teams. On the day off the assessment my stress level elevated, but the patient was welcoming which made me little settled.

Evaluation The best thing was I managed quiet well. Firstly, I performed social hand wash, putting the gloves on, I wiped my trolley, took all the necessary instruments, checked their expiry dates and that is how I prepared my trolley (Royal Children Hospital, 2020). I went to patient’s bed

and arranged the bed height. After that I performed my clinical hand wash, I prepared my work environment, as I came in and closed the door to maintain patient’s privacy and dignity (NMBA, 2020). Aseptic technique is used during clinical procedures to prevent contamination of aseptic sites by making sure that they do not come in contact indirectly or directly (Hegarty et al., 2019). I understand how using the right aseptic wound technique can impact the wound healing (Lewis et al., 2020). It is important for you not to compromise with the healing process by introducing potential pathogens to the susceptible site (Baranoski & Ayello, 2016).

Analysis Selecting appropriate dressings and techniques based on assessment and scientific evidence about wound management is vital for patient’s wound recovery (Hegarty et al., 2019). Due to the high risk of patient contracting infection is higher if proper ANNT is not correctly done (Baranoski & Ayello, 2016). I cooperated professionally with my patient and my peers. I asked my tutor questions about the wound dressing products and procedure to assist improve my knowledge and skilled growth. I was not familiar with chronic wound dressing, so ensuring that I work within my scope of practice and made a note to do more research prior to the workshop (NMBA, 2016). I understand that a nurse, it is significant beneficence to provide a care for patient that will improve their wellbeing in a long run ( Hunter & Miller, 2016).

Conclusion The assessment overall went well. Performing wound care assessment in the class with my peers was very easy than doing it in a hospital setting. That really made me more nervous.

However, I understand how infection control, critical thinking, contamination and decontamination, analysing nursing practice are important to wound care. Establishing a therapeutic relationship with the patients and how ANTT simple dressing plays a fundamental role in patient’s overall health wellbeing.

Action I understand understand how essential it to perform the correct ANTT technique when caring for a patient’s wound. The optimal performance of the aseptic technique depends on effective infection control to wound. promoting an understanding of the barriers to healing can contribute to the wound outcome. This can be providing a systematic approach such wound management plan and reviews updates in place.
