Steven Gomez Social Science Module 7

Which social movement did you choose, and what interests you about the movement? The social movement that I decided to choose is The Black Lives Matter Movement. What interested me about that movement is how the group only focuses on incidents pertaining to people of opposite color (white).

How have you learned about this social movement (news articles, social media, social commentary, conversation with others, television news)? I have learned about this movement by researching, conversations with very close friends and family. I have also seen news articles and post on Facebook about the group.

What is the “big question” or inquiry that the movement is trying to answer? I believe the question the group is trying to answer is minorities are always the target of police violence. Secondly, I also believe they are also trying to figure out why there are no resources in the inner cities.

What do you think has caused the movement to gain or lose momentum? How does this movement either directly or indirectly impact your day-to-day life? For example, if you are looking at the environmental movement, maybe you were directly impacted by a tax break for purchasing a new Prius or putting new energy-efficient windows in your home

I think the movement had no zero chance of gaining momentum. I believe they lost momentum due to causing chaos, damage to city properties, harming innocent people, not gathering all the useful and important information to better understand the topic at hand. I believe the movement affects me directly due to being a law enforcement officer and a person of color wearing a uniform. Being called a coon, or sellout and also comments such as “ You couldn’t find anything better to do instead of helping the white man harm your people” has made me reflect on multiple occasions on weather I made the right choice. I can confidently answer that by saying yes. I try everyday to open up to the group if I interact with them but alone has been very difficult....
