Description

Rubric As you complete your book reviews, please remember to review the rubric once more that I have discussed with you to be certain to completely cover all aspects of the assignment. Remember to also write in third person, even when giving an opinion. Along with these instructions, you must also consider the following ideas…. a) Watch for sentence fragments and run-on sentences: Make certain that your sentence has a clear subject and a clear verb. Do not attach two sentences by a comma; use a semi-colon instead. b) Watch for words that sound alike but have different spellings and meanings. Consider such words as there, they’re and their or where and were or affect and effect. c) Always remember that any opinion you give must be accompanied by a fact as evidence. d) All book titles or magazine and newspaper titles should be e) Do not refer to your author only by their first name. You can do that some when speaking of their childhood but after that they should be referred only by their last names. f) com should only show nothing higher than 30% plagiarism. If you have more than 30% I would suggest you edit your paper more and turn in a second copy. g) Do not use Wikipedia, spark notes, or any encyclopedias as sources. h) Always cite such items as quotes, statistics, and sentences that may have been slightly rewritten but still sounds more like the author’s voice than yours. i) Citations must be consecutive throughout the paper. You can use footnotes or endnotes. j) Remember to have a strong introduction at the beginning of the paper and a stronger conclusion that wraps up what you’ve been trying to say to your reader. k) Any quotes that are more than five lines long should be single-spaced. 1) Remember that your paper needs to be double-spaced. Most computers already have your system set up this way. 2. The page numbers I've set in the instructions refer to the content of your paper. A title page or a bibliography page is additional. Finally, in addition to this, remember that your paper should be deposited in the assignment folder either in rich text (rtf) or in word. THIS IS IMPORTANT AS THE SYSTEM WILL NOT OPEN EVERYTHING YOU SAVE YOUR PAPERS IN! Each student will choose a book from the enclosed list and write a review of the work, discussing the author’s thesis, the contents of the book, the background of the author, and concluding with the student’s opinion on whether the work accomplished its purpose for the reader. You are also researching just how this book fits within the historical period it describes. Even those works that are memoirs may not completely describe all the events of a particular era.

Consider the following breakdown for your paper: Review of the work itself…………………………………………………………..50% Biography of the author and the author’s reason for writing this work……………20% Does the book accurately or inaccurately describe the history in the book?............20% Your opinion of the book…………………………………………………………..10% Your research paper should be a minimum of SIX FULL PAGES and a maximum of EIGHT pages. It should be written in third person with TIMES NEW ROMAN 12-point font. Your paper should have at least five sources and sources should be cited in the Chicago Manual of Style. YOUR PAPER SHOULD BE PLACED IN THE DROPBOX ONLY IN THE FOLLOWING FORMS: DOC OR DOCX OR RTF Remember to write the paper in third person only!! Remember that a book review is NOT like a high school book report! This is a sophisticated critique of the importance of this work. In including additional information, such as the biography of the author, remember to cite this material using the CHICAGO MANUAL OF STYLE (which can be found on the library website). Use only 3rd person in your paper, even when stating your own opinion. Also, when referring to a person, do not do so by using the person’s first name. Overall, make certain that you are writing this paper in the most scholarly manner possible, not as if you were discussing the topic. That is why spell and grammar check is necessary, along with an overall review of the paper before it is turned in....
