General Information Lesson Title: planets Subject(s): Earth and space science Grade/Level/Setting: 3rd grade, whole group, partners and independent Prerequisite Skills/Prior Knowledge: Need to know what a solar system is and the definition of a planet Students must already know we live on planet Earth

Standards and Objectives State/National Academic Standard(s): ESS1-MS-3 Analyze and interpret data to determine scale properties of objects in the solar system. CCC-ESS1-MS-3 Use data to order the planets based on their size or distance from the sun

Learning Objective(s): HANDS ON: Students will build a model of the solar system placing the planets in correct order in relation to the sun getting 8/8 correct Formal assessment: students will correctly identify the names of the planets and how the align to the sun with a 100% accuracy.

Materials

Technology

Solar system model

By using the laptops, interactive white boards, and videos it will provide students especially ones that may be struggling or are English language learners with greater access to comprehend and remember what we are talking about.

Styrofoam balls (different sizes and halved) Poster board 1 for each student Blank white paper

Order the plants worksheet

Interactive white board laptops Video of the solar system https://youtu.be/Vb2ZXRh74WU Set of solar system cards Solar system worksheet:

Language Demands Specific ways that academic language (vocabulary, functions, discourse, syntax) is used by students to participate in learning tasks through reading, writing, listening, and/or speaking to demonstrate their understanding.

Language Function: Students will be able to pace planet cards in groups and justify why they did it on a worksheet. As well as Students will be able to identify the 8 planets by creating a model of the planets.

Vocabulary: solar system, planets, sun, moon, astronomers, orbit, dwarf planets, terrestrial planets, gas giants .

Discourse and/or Syntax: Students will be able to sort and group the planet cards-based on the information they learn and the information on the back of the cards. Students will be able to correctly label and place the planets in the correct order in relation to the sun.

Planned Language Supports:

. •

Will introduce the vocabulary word and their definitions

I will have a model of the planets and were they are in relation to the sun in the front of the class

Will show a video at the beginning of class that shows the plants and their names

Instructional Strategies and Learning Tasks

Activity Description/Teacher

Student Actions

Engage:

I will hand each group a set of 8 cards these are solar system cards. I will explain that they will look only at the picture side and work with their group to sort them and to place them in groups

As the kids are sorting and grouping, they will then start an indepth conversation about how they should be sorted and why they feel that way. After about 5 min the students will stop and I will call on a few groups to have them tell me what the cards are they students should tell me it’s the plants of the solar system I will write that down then each group will tell me how they grouped them and why(there is no wrong answers here)

Explore:

Students will still have the cards I will have them turn the cards over to look at the information on the back after they talk with their group the students will come together as a whole to discuss the information on the back.

I will have one student from each group come write distance from the Sun. they 1st sort the cards by this. diameter of the planet (size) then the sort the cards by this type of planet (gas or rocky)

time of orbit around the Sun temperature students will work on the worksheet which will help them with sorting the cards based on the data on the back of the cards. Explain:

After students work together on the worksheets I will then talk with the students about the cards and explain the 3 main ways that the cards can be sorted

The students will answer questions about the different ways that it can be sorted, and I will call on a few students to show how to place them in those categories.

Elaborate:

I will give the students the materials to start creating their own model of the planets along with an example

The kids on their own will either paint, draw, color, or a combination of things to create their own model of the planets and label them correctly.

Evaluate:

After students are finished with their models I will come around and look at them and given feedback. Then students will be given a worksheet they will need to correctly identify all 8 planets as well as their position in relation to the sun getting 8/8 correct.

Students after getting feedback will then be able to fix their models. After wards students will have the opportunity to show their models to the class as well as if any students did a paper on a specific plant, they will be given 5 min to present it.

Differentiated Instruction Consider how to accommodate for the needs of each type of student. Be sure that you provide content specific accommodations that help to meet a variety of learning needs.

Gifted and Talented: These students can be given the option to choose a planet of their choose and do a research paper on

it to go along with their model. ELL: Students will be given instruction in their native language and planet labels printed up for them in both English and their native language.

Students with Other Special Needs: It will be modified and they will get printed labels and the labels will be placed in the right are they just have to match the planet to the name and they will also be allowed to use a diagram to help them.

Assessment Formative Formative assessment will be done while students are working with their group on filling out the worksheets. I will observe students with their group during this time, I will ask them questions, provide feedback, and will adjust instruction if necessary

Summative: After having a class discussion on plants were, they are in relation to the sun the Students will be given a test. Students will complete the test with 100% accuracy by labeling the planets in the correct order as they align to the sun....
