Tutor: It is important that students reflect on the progress they have made through each module and think through what aspects of their practice needs development. Critical reflection is an important process of developing a practice. Every module has learning outcomes, we use these learning outcomes to mark the work presented at assessment. We would like you to use the space below to evaluate your work and use the learning outcomes listed below as a point of reference. There is no right or wrong way to approach this reflective text. The purpose is for you to think through and note down how you think the practice is developing. Using the learning outcomes as a starting point for your reflection you might ask yourself a series of questions for example: Have you managed your time well and engaged with all aspects of the course? What methods have you been testing out and what has been revealed? Are you able to evaluate the work and can we see you working through things? How does the work sit in a broader context – what are you looking at and is this impacting on your own work? Here are the learning outcomes for this module: On successful completion of the module students will be able to demonstrate:      

Evidence of good time management, organisational skills and an engagement with the course. A range of methods and skills appropriate to the realisation of their artwork, with evidence of an exploration of ideas toward a clear direction. An ability to further evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to solving problems related to their area(s) of study and/or work. Knowledge and an understanding of the underlying concepts and principles associated with Fine Art, and an ability to evaluate and interpret these within a broader context. An ability to identify and engage with appropriate academic material using scholarly research tools. An ability to present, evaluate and interpret qualitative and quantitative data, in order to develop lines of argument and make sound judgments in accordance with basic theories and concepts of Fine Art.

Use the space below to reflect on the development of your practice (please continue on a separate page if necessary): During this module, I have meticulously written ideas and thoughts in a notebook, video recorded and voice recorded my work progress, and explored work ideas and outcomes in my sketchbook. I have used video and voice recordings to record the development of my work, these recordings have led me to reflect on my work, allowing me to explore ideas toward a clear direction. After reflecting on my recordings, ideas and thoughts, I could pin point any problems that might have occurred during my area of study. It was also very important for me to explore different approaches to solving problems, one of which was ensuring that if the photography studios were fully booked, then I would have a plan B. I have explored the idea that “the mask is the convergence of all the arts”, by using papier mâché and magazine cut outs to create two masks, that converge the two sexes into one category. The masks are figurative and absurd, creating a sense of vulnerability and confusion between the viewer and the performer. The masks hide the performers identity, ultimately, converging both the mask and them into one. The final video shows both male and female dancing whilst unidentified in masks. I wanted to combine humor with absurdity to mimic the absurd critique that females face in modern day society. This first clip shows a female body wearing a mask, repeatedly scrubbing a chopping board. This clip is a significant part of the video as it is a critique of the commodified versions of traditional women’s roles in modern day society. The performers are a significant part of the video, as both male and female are diverse, ultimately engaging in promoting political revolution. A mixture of intense music and 50’s sexist commercials are repeated in the background of the video, these are used to exaggerate the intensity of such issues, and the frustration with the language of domesticity. As Dianne Bauer said in her lecture about “feeling a constant process of trying to clarify what you mean in your art” I believe that this piece is successful without clarification, working well as a subjective piece alone. The final video might be unclear to some as its very figurative, and absurd. This could cause judgments and confusion, but as a video performance, my thoughts are whether it needs justifying? Some performers believe that the beauty of a performance are in the existing moment, and I believe that this video speaks alone.

This form should be completed before your assessment. The completed form should be kept safely in your folder and be presented with your work at the final assessment point....
