ARO 00380 08/15 Self-reflective essay (Individual) For the past month, my team has been working tirelessly on the Business Communication project. It was not only grades that motivated us but also the opportunity to apply what we had learned to a real-world business communication scenario. All in all, I think the final project is practical. It dawned on me after the project assignment was completed that we were not only here to study for the record but also so that the lessons we learned would endure a lifetime once we leave the classroom and enter the real business environment out there. I believe my most significant contribution to the project was in the early stages of the project. With the experience of working in two clubs/organizations, I am already proficient and familiar with an organization's working process, composing formal emails and creating action plans, checklists, proposals,... Therefore, my team had a clear direction in planning this project and preparing materials to send out to the organization. We knew what we should do first and what followed. As we did well in the planning and preparing process, the rest of the project was smooth and did not arise many problems. To begin, we came to realize the importance of good communication. This is the first time we have done something for a real organization outside of WSU, a non-governmental group. As a result of our differing occupations, our guest's desires and comprehension did not match up sometimes. Subsequently, it required much effort to get everyone on the same page, which hampered the team's effectiveness. On the other hand, the final project allows us to put everything we have learned into practice. We have learned a lot about communication, including how to communicate effectively, comprehend others' perspectives, collaborate as a group, and overcome cultural and geographic barriers in the current situation. Effective communication requires not just a grasp of the information but also the communicators' ideas, wants, feelings, and intentions, which are unlikely to be stated verbally (Cheesebro, O'connor & Rios, 2010). Following, the course tasks, which required us to create and brainstorm, were insufficient. We were conducting business with a genuine organization, and their criteria and conditions are unquestionably different from what we have confronted and done so far at WSU course. As a result, we had to go the extra mile, actively investigating the project to learn what they are doing and their goals to come up with a project that satisfies their needs. We have applied the 5W and 1 H models into this process. Finally, this project in particular and this semester, in general, were all taken place online. Global networking has expanded over time to include social media, digital apps, virtual conversations that allow us to break the geographic barrier. Even though, the lack of face-to-face communication made it difficult for us to communicate and make friends at first because we were strangers to each other before the course. At times, we stumbled on some miscommunication situations. Nonetheless, the problem was swiftly resolved so rapidly that I thought we had no conflicts during the project. After completing this project, I found that, although communication has evolved in the twenty-first century of business, the most practical method to

connect with people in a social context is by sharing human experiences via personal narratives that encourage dialogues. Aside from that, I was aware of the necessity of social skills for the simple reason that we were inexperienced freshmen with poor interpersonal and communication abilities. Due to this, we had a few talks that were misconstrued. In addition, I now understand how important it is to listen and select the proper reply from the categories of evaluating and interpreting, supporting and questioning, and paraphrasing (Cheesbro et al., 2010) for a team to be successful. The project taught me a lot of valuable things, most of which are transferable skills and concepts. Starting with PAIBOC, it is essential to understand what it implies. Purpose, Audience, Information, Benefits, Objection, and Context were all presented and practiced from the beginning. PAIBOC, I believe, is something that we must comprehend and apply to achieve our objective. PAIBOC is a handy tool. Although I have only been using it for a short time, I have seen a significant improvement in my speaking and writing abilities. Secondly, I learned that I should be a proactive person, not a passive one. After the project, I realized that I was wrong in being inactive, especially in communicating with the organization and team members. I should have had the mindset of a product owner to have better motivation and control over the team's work. In addition, there is nothing we could do about the current social situation affected by the Covid-19 lockdown so that we should put more effort into communicating with each other for bonding and empathizing with each other while working. Those are the most valuable things I learned from the project, and maybe they will be helpful in my future profession. In the end, it is not what we learned that matters, but what we perceived and remembered. Since then, I have learned to approach problems differently and quit making a mountain out of a molehill. I know I have learned a lot, but now it is time to put what we have learned to the test - reality. I will apply my knowledge of Business Communication to my work in extracurricular activities. Besides, I have always struggled with interpersonal skills; therefore, I want to work on them whenever feasible. Because, after all, practice makes perfect.
