SEXISM ...

Description

Eva Fares Professor Craig Literature and Film 4 April 2018 Sexism is our society Sexism is the discrimination against a specific gender, typically it is against women. Sexism has always been a major issue for women throughout the ages and it still exists until now to some level. For example men are always expected to pay for the first date, or that food should be ready and served when the men come home from work, even though most women have a job now these days, but still it does not matter what the woman goes through in the day, the man has to get his needs. The writer Callie Khouri was interested into introducing sexism to us though her film Thelma and Louise, that showed how society views and treats women.

Thelma and Louise were two women that just wanted to go on a trip together for fun and forget about all their problems in the real world. Little did they know that this trip was going to bring misery. From the opening scene Thelma was a housewife that feared her husband, which is not to be blamed for because even when she is trying to comfort him, he yells at her and treats her like his slave by keeping her in the house. She needs to take permission from her husband to go out with her friend, which she knows that he will say “no”, so does not bother asking and just goes on her own. In the film Thelma and Louise, women were treated like little girls, or toys. No one cared about what they had to say or felt. Men were the dominate in the film, they had

specific jobs like truck drivers, and harassing women was the normal thing to them. In the incident where Thelma was going to get raped by Harlan, a guy that they met at the club. Harlan did not even hesitated to stop and got scared when he saw Louise raising the gun at him, but he even mocked her, thinking that she is a little girl that happens to have a toy with her. Louise was frustrated and angry of how men have been treating her like she is a worthless little baby that cannot do anything, and cannot be taking seriously or even defend her friend and shooting Harlan. They had to run away after that, because they knew that no one would believe them, since every one in the club saw Thelma dancing with him.

Throughout the movie it was stated very clearly that woman were not good enough for the society to be treated the same as men. This is a very important topic because If everyone gets treated the same everyone will have the same chance in life. Government claims that every one is treated the same. A man should not be getting paid more than woman just because he is a man, especially if they have the same job and do the same work. Equal pay for equal work and one should not be limited to work in a category just because it happens to be what people of ones sex has worked with before. In a society where everyone is equal no one will have to feel like they are cast a side. Since Women have been oppressed for so long and fought for their own rights like to vote and to be accepted in a working environment to change the old stereotype that women have to stay at home, doing housework and watching the kids, while the man works. But now we have women being underpaid for a man’s amount of work....
