Based off the information that was in the article Patterson tend to talk about the clean room and how different things effect our solar system. He also wanted to figure out what was harming us as humans and all other living breathing things on earth secondhand smoke being one of them as well as gasoline. When Patterson began his research, it came to the realization the lead in our surrounding environment was vehicles gasoline was a toxic poison threat to us as humans and animals. In 2018, the tobacco industry spent over 9 billion dollars in advertising according to the CDC. When it came to advertising, they weren’t just trying to push cigarettes but also other tobacco products such as vapes, pens and cigars. They tend to target young people so they can start smoking at an earlier age to get more money. How do you think “big money” provided by the tobacco industry to fund alternate research efforts reflects the importance of the role of funding in research? Well, when it comes to funding you need it for anything you decide to invest in and when it comes to tobacco, they targeted the audience they thought would be the easiest to influence which is younger people, these are the people who where paying so those are the people who were favorable. Tobacco companies put all types of money into research that benefits them. There are documents that show how tobacco companies funded epidemiological and biological research that was designed to support claims that secondhand smoke has little to no harm which we all know isn’t true.
