Description

Sociology Unit 4

According to sociology, sex is defined as the physical and/or biological and physiological difference between and females (Little, 2014). Gender is defined as the social expectations about the difference between a male’s masculinity and a female’s femininity. Sociologists need to differentiate between sex and gender as the expression of gender identification, which is a person’s psychological connection to under, challenges the “social script” written based on gender roles (Little, 2014). Because of this resistance to what is expected, social control and order are challenged.

There are several strategies to lessening the effects of gender stratification in the workplace. They are generally social reforms, but are important, nonetheless. One of these is to change the understanding of leadership roles. Leadership is much more of an influencing role in modern society compared to the dominating and domineering leadership types of societies past (Batool, 2013). In addition to this, developing and advancing women’s confidence in their capacity to lead will be of great worth. Although the role of each person, with their strengths and weaknesses, is different, the value of one is not more or less than that of the other. This is a principle that needs to become a social “norm” for gender stratification to lessen and, eventually, disappear entirely.

Gender stratification is harmful to both men and women. Besides those mentioned in Introduction to Sociology, such as role strain and its resulting health conditions, which are then followed by the gender stratification in health treatment in young and older females, there are others, too(Little, 2014). One example of how it is harmful to the partnership between men and women is that it lessens women’s capacity to be of value in business. Although the challenge of facing and opposing society’s expectations can be exhilarating, it can be frustrating when constantly faced with it. Frustration, in effect, lessens one’s efficiency when working with others especially. Gender stratification is harmful to men in that it limits them to “acceptable” roles in society, in comparison to the roles they are passionate about and therefore would be best fitted to. All in all, gender stratification is harmful to society overall.
