Social Media Revolution 60-209

There is no arguing the fact that social media, along with the exponentially developing technology, is drastically changing the world around us. At the click of a button, an entire database of knowledge becomes instantly available within the palm of your hand allowing users to freely explore and learn. These individuals may choose to follow world news, sporting events, schooling updates or even use this technology to catch up with friends. No matter what the purpose, social media and technology brings this type of information to the user conveniently anywhere in the world. Social media has dramatically changed the way sporting news is presented to the public due to live updating and streaming. In the past, sports’ broadcasting was done strictly through television and radio, but recently there has been a shift towards Internet based media techniques such as Facebook, Twitter and company websites. This type of media allows for a larger population of consumers to be reached when presenting specific knowledge to society. An example of this is how the sports media company TSN (The Sports Network) uses twitter to reach fans and present new, relevant information to the curious consumer. As mentioned in the article, the current society is hungry for new information regarding any business moves a respected company is planning to make. Society nowadays is focused on obtaining information extremely fast which is why social media companies such as Facebook and Twitter have become so successful. This is considered an instant gratification society in which people are enjoying very shortterm entertainment before moving on to the next piece of relevant media that catches

their attention. Although this type of presentation style has allowed information to reach all people around the world, it has also become a major problem regarding the youth population. Due to the explosion of technology, the younger generation has seen a greater time spent in front of a screen compared to other age groups. This has caused unhealthy, sedentary habits to manifest within this generation, which has caused a childhood obesity and diabetic issue to present itself. Although the developing technology has made many people lives much easier, this is just one example of the negative effects it can have on today society. A large challenge many companies undergo during business planning is attempting to bring the best possible experience to their customers ensuring customer loyalty and profit generation. As mentioned in the article, one airline company created an app targeting their customers attempting to create an easy, stress free experience in order to create comfortability between the two sides. Another example of this is the NHL creating an app for their annual outdoor games that allows fans to order food, merchandise and even watch live replays of the game all from their personal electronic device (NHL Public Relations, 2015). This was done in an attempt to maximize profits by enhancing the fan experience and increasing consumer consumption of the respected products. This social media technique ended up being extremely successful as a record number of fans downloaded the app causing it to temporarily crash prior to the game. One unique way in which many people are using social media and technology is for the purpose of education. Universities and Colleges have created personal Twitter, Facebook, Instagram etc. accounts that directly relate to students everyday life on

campus. Not only are schools using social media to update students on events happening within the school, but they are also using this technology to teach. Schools are now offering a wide variety of online classes in which students can attend from the comfort of their own homes. This has been a very successful operation because students can focus on their online classes at a time of convenience for themselves, without being on a pre-determined schedule. Overall, social media and technology has taken over large aspects of everyday life bringing people around the world together with live news updates and information. We have learned that this form of technology can be extremely beneficial but can also have negative side effects influencing different generations throughout society. Technology and social media will always be expanding, the challenge is learning how to use it in a way that benefits everybody within the target audience and throughout society.
