SOCIOLOGY SBA GUIDELINES Advisory It is very important to follow the instructions on this sheet, to complete the SBA efficiently. It is advisable that when you have selected a social problem that you should do research on the social problem collecting information from books, newspaper articles (from reputable media companies and not opinionated columns) and scholarly journal articles. It will be useful to see how the theoretical approaches you have learned could be applied to the social problem. Steps to take when you want to do well in completing you SBA: 1. Select a social problem from the ones your teacher has guided you to choose. 2. Interpret what the social problem may entail and break it down by brainstorming with your teacher and or your colleagues. This will aid you in the longrun. Make sure you write down what you are brainstorming for future reference. 3. Do not formulate your own ideas about the social problem or predict the results. This will cause problems when you are doing the data collection. 4. Start reading up on the social problems with the aid of books, scholarly journals and newspaper article that are written by authors with expertise in the area. Make a note of these referencing material because they may be the one you will use to write your literature review. Try to incorporate in your search classical and Caribbean sociological theories of the problem. This will help in your literature review. 5. Start to formulate a statement of problem with the information you have gathered. Bear in mind that while you were researching and reading you were getting ideas as to: a. the issues that may cause the social problem, b. the levels at which they exist in the society, c. the effects of the problem on society d. And some possible solutions. This will help you to determine what variables/concepts you will want work with when you are formulating statement of the problem. 6. Identify your variables, technical terms and concepts and make sure you know what they mean. Variables can take on many meanings; technical terms are specific terms that are unique to a particular area and concept are words that build up an idea or hypothesis or even a conclusion (operationalization). 7. You may modify your statement as you go but you would have understood what areas you are focusing on and what areas you are not. 8. Make sure your aims and objectives are in line with your research problem. 9. Make sure your literature review is an analysis and not an exposition.
