Hailee Andrews English 112-27 02/17/2020 A Cure for Modern Conversation As time continues and the modern society grows, technological advancements make way to headlines. The talk on how technology is affecting the youth is a main topic and is a widespread talking point for a lot of argumental writers. Sherry Turkle, a writer with a Ph.D. in sociology, personality psychology, and a BA in social studies takes in interest in how technology is tearing people away from their natural human connections and transforming people into “social robots,” (Alone Together, Turkle). In her article written for The New York Times, “ Stop Googling. Let’s Talk.” Turkle emphasizes her side of the technological debate and claims that rather than giving up phones, using them with a greater intention can act as a “talking cure”. As well as going about phones with caution, we also need to find ourselves in solitude to be able to have an empathetic conversation which is vital to have some kind of human connection. Human connection has been lost and the people have become more robotic. Paragraph ten briefly explains that we are so tied into our phones, but we don’t need to be. Instead of throwing our phones away, there is a right-time-right-place attitude that lots of people have missed. Just understanding that “conversation is there for us to reclaim” and that we can put our phones down and engage in a conversation with another person face-to-face would be everso beneficial to gain our human connection back. As we grow, there are still a variety of ways to stay in touch with the people around us where we’re not addicted to our phones. Summer camps are a great way to engage with the

people around us, also giving us a chance to sit alone with ourselves and take a minute to think. Paragraph fifteen allows us to see the kind of impact that technology and social media has on the youth. One camper talks about how it’s a "time where you have nothing to do but think quietly and talk to your friends." Being away from the digital world allows people to find solitude and makes it possible to be apart of an empathetic conversation. Turkle has studied the way people can form connections and took an interest in the role that technology plays in the daily life of many. After many articles on social-psychology and the impact of technology, I would say she has a very good grasp on the information and stance she takes when writing. She includes an understanding and empathetic tone when writing, making it comfortable and light for people to read while making a clear statement on her take on the information. The material has a lot of insight on the correlation between people and technology and I believe it’s making it more difficult to communicate with each other. After seeing how hard it was for my 13 year old sister to communicate in school after being able to talk for hours on the phone was mind-boggling to me. People don’t have the best social skills and when talking, things come out robotic and very bland. I think that being able to talk to yourself and b around others takes the awkwardness away and gives empathy to the situation. There is a time and a place for phones and when used appropriately, human connection won’t be lost to a digital surface....
