In Sherry Turkle’s Ted Talk, “Connected but Alone?”, she talks about her experiences with technology and what she thinks it is doing to us as humans and society as a whole. The main point of her speech is that we are taking technology too far and letting it control our lives . She expresses her ideas about how most people in today’s age are way too invested in their phones and what goes on underneath a screen.

She talks about the “Goldilocks Effect” which is the idea that people want to remain close, but not too close to each other. But we want to stay far away, but not too far, from each other. As humans, we all want to be in control as much as possible. People crave power. Maybe not every person in this universe, but it’s safe to say that a large amount of us are constantly searching for as much power and control over everything as we can get. Nowadays, technology gives us the ability to edit and present the best version of ourselves. We have control over how people see us through technology, when in real day to day life, through physical interaction, our control on how people view us only goes so far.

It’s so common in this era to text and be on your phone during class, during dinner or even during conversations. We hide behind a phone screen and live through a different life that isn’t out in the open where we can be vulnerable. Sherry Turkle believes that it shouldn’t have to be like this, and that it’s only going to lead us to trouble in the end. In her Ted Talk, she continues to encourage us as humans to stray away from using technology as a better world and a better way to communicate with friends, family and those that you love. There shouldn’t have to be this fantasy that the online world is much better than the real world we live in. She suggests that we should find ways to use technology to help us find our way back to the real world and our real lives. Instead of hiding behind a screen and a virtuality, we should use technology by empowering our lives and loving it how it is....
