Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION

Rationale of the Study The formulation of new thinking skills as well as excellence in terms of academics are the demands of today’s global society. In addressing this, young people need to understand these skills and be able to make an environment, that is fit for these young people. For the youths of today are now in the 21st century and are called millenials. They are now facing an era wherein the world expect them to have more, innovative, creative and extraordinary outputs that they can give in. To be more specific, are among students who are now bombarded with a higher level of proficiency in the specific fields as wells as activities and performances that are inclined to their courses that they are into. Among all the activities, right amount or ample time is given to each and every task in order for them to be effective and efficiently performing well in their respective areas. Even managers working in multicultural teams or when dealing with their customers overseas have problems arising from cultural differences to which they have little idea about it. One of those key cultural differences is time and how it is perceived by others. Time might be the same amount for all people but it is perceived differently on personal or cultural level. For Americans and Russians, time management is the usual root of their conflict when they are doing business. Americans view time as a material: “Time is money”.They have this materialistic approach attached to achievements and time. In U.S., time is really important to the point that meeting deadlines is a must and not meeting the exact of it would be considered as a bad gesture for them. “Time is the scarcest resource and unless it is managed nothing else can be managed.”,

as what Peter F. Drucker said. While in the perspective of Russians, time is elastic for them.“People” come before time, a Russian proverb says: “seven people do not wait for one”. They have different view than Americans, because they do not consider being late as a rude one and the deadlines are flexible. Russian management is not westernized when it comes to time management and planning is not strict. They solved their issues or problems under pressure and stress at the eleventh hour. So, working with a Russian team you need to be used in working in late hours. This is the direct effect of dealing with works in the last-minute, so their employees usually work until 11 pm or 1 am. This is why when American firms do business in Russia, it usually takes more time than they usually do in US for building connections with them before getting into business. Moreover, contacting one another should be keep and continue. Learners in the Philippines practice frequently for they would not learn just by simply following what are being told or watching others. They engage into time management systems to be able to establish a study pattern that work for them and incorporate active learning methods to increase meaning and interest on their study time as well as keeping their selves motivated by thinking of their life goals and values towards their reason in studying. To which by doing these they will be able to increase their performance academically. This kind of situation is evident on the researchers’ student life, for they now face the competitive world of academics, where there is a certain standard and degree of competency in order to excel and survive in this ever growing world. This prompt the researchers to conduct a study to know what is really the sufficient time spent in studying the subjects involve in their curriculum ABM(Accountancy, Business and Management) in order to be effective in managing studies. The University of Cebu - Banilad is an educational institution located in Banilad, Cebu City, Philippines. It was constructed on 2001 and was finished and start its operations in 2002.

Today it offers senior high school and undergraduate degrees, and post-graduate degrees. The study is to be conducted in University of Cebu - Banilad Campus in which the university envisions “Democratize quality education, Be the Visionary and Industry Leader, Give hope and transform lives”. The university’s mission is to offer affordable and quality education responsive to the demands of local and international communities. The study is align and can be an agent in order for the university to achieve its quality education that they want to give to their students. According to Cambridge University Press (2017), studying is about to look at something carefully to learn about it. This means that in studying, individuals don't need to search about something nonsense works instead they must use it as a tool in doing their tasks and needs. It describes studying as the time spent learning about or investigating a subject or it is also to revise materials already learned in order to make sure one does not forget them, usually in preparation for an examination. So students are the usual ones who do the studying. (yourdictionary.com, 2017). Now time management greatly affects the student’s management of its studies. According to Lam and Start (2017), in their article “Time Management: A Key to Success” they define time management as how you organize and plan the time you spend on specific activities. On the surface of things, it seems that time management should be easy and straightforward —something that just happens. In practice, time management is a skill that takes effort to develop. It is also about spending your time in the right places, on the right thing. In order to manage your time effectively, it’s important to know your priorities, obligations, and schedule. You have to find the strategy that works for you. For time management involves determining one’s needs, setting goals to meet needs, and prioritizing and planning to meet goals (Lakein, 1973).

Now, applying time management in studying takes effort and time. Time is perceived differently, so it is very important that the time management is properly conducted for each studies for it could not work out to one or to others. The time spent for studying of ABM students in their studies in order for them to acquire effective study management must be look into for the curriculum for they are now facing is different from the usual that the students all over the country had, over the past years. This study can also be a tool for the avoidance of procrastination which is common to students. According to O’Brien (2002) up to 40% of university students experience procrastination as a problem. Also, Taraban et. al. (1999) reported that students tended to mass their practice (that is, do most of the work in marathon sessions) near academic deadlines and failed to make appropriate use of various study aids and supports at appropriate times (i.e., earlier in the term). According also to a research report made by Burrus, Jackson, Holtzman, Roberts and Mandigo(2013), research attempting to improve the time management of college students has also received mixed support. Adamson et al. (2004) assessed the time management of first-year college students who were exposed to a time management demonstration, a lecture on stress and coping, and given a time management manual and exercises (e.g., calendar, to-do list) after completing a survey. Students who read the manual scored significantly higher in meeting deadlines and effective organization than students who did not. Although many of these students felt that their time management skills did not improve, they still reported that time management was important to their success (Adamson et al., 2004). The main goal of the research study is to be able to come up with the sufficient amount of time to be spent in studying of ABM students of their subjects in order to have a more effective study management, which will also tackle how proper time management affects the academics

standing of students. This aims to come up with a good study habit with the utilization of time towards it. This also aims to scrutinize the right amount time to be given in studying for it to work on majority of the students or even for a general crowd. The researchers, being ABM students, will surely benefit from this study which aims to get the sufficient time needed to have effective management of studies, for the researchers are also exposed in their different subjects that are needed to be properly studied. The ABM students as a whole would also acquire good tips as well as study habits that could boost their academic performance. Also, the incoming ABM students that will take up the subjects that is involve in the research study or in studying alone, the output of the research study will be of great help for them to be prepared and proactive in their studies as well as the management of it. Even the aspiring honor students or those who wants to attain or achieve a higher or even highest rank out of all, they can apply the result of the study as well as the way on how to effectively manage studies with the use of proper allocation of their time.

Theoretical/Conceptual Framework of the Study This research study is anchored on the theory of time management of Wright (2008), in which he stated the pickle jar theory. The pickle jar theory discusses the time management to which a big pickle jar is supposed to be one’s time and capacity, and this shall be filled with rocks, pebbles, sand, and water. The rocks represent one’s major priorities in life, while pebbles signifies the tasks or hobbies which are less important. The sand represents the things that one needs to squeeze into his or her time and capacity, while water represents distraction which tries to get in through major and important things in life. This asserts that these four elements are not bad and from major priorities down to the least essential in life are needed in order to be fulfilled just like

how a pickle jar can be filled with all those elements. The important idea given by the theory is that proper allocation of time towards all activities enables an individual to fit everything into the jar or its time and capacity.

Figure 1. Model for the effects of time spent in studying towards an effective study management of students The conceptual framework of the research study is shown in Figure 1 above. The independent variable which is the amount of time spent in studying, will be determined by acquiring information about the time allotted by students and hours provided by students in studying. This would lead to its effect on study management of students, which will be evaluated through the academic grades and exam or test grade of students, as well as if the students crams or procrastinate.

Problem Statement The researcher aims to determine the adequate time that must be spent in studying of Senior High School Grade 12 students in the ABM ( Accountancy, Business and Management ) strand of the University of Cebu - Banilad Campus in the selected subjects of the first semester of academic year 2017-2018 towards an effective managing of their studies. The result of the

research study would be the basis of the formulation of an effective study habits among ABM students. The researcher seeks to answer the following questions: 1. What is the degree of the study habits of ABM students when it comes to: a. The amount of time spent of each subjects b. Their performances in each subject c. Their perspective on their effectivity 2. How does time management or proper allocation of time helps in achieving a higher academic performance? 3. What is the usual and average time spent in studying of ABM students? Hypotheses Ho:

There is no significant relationship between time spent in studying and study management as well as level of performance among Grade 12 ABM students.

Ha:

There is a significant relationship between time spent in studying and study management as well as level of performance among Grade 12 ABM students.

Assumptions The following statements are assumed by the researchers: 1. Time spent in studying significantly affects the effectiveness of the student’s study management. 2. The student’s academic grades greatly reflects the effectiveness of their study management.

3. Time management application would contribute to an effective management of studies by students. 4. Students who procrastinate or do cramming often leads to lower effectiveness in studying. Significance of the Study This study will greatly contribute and help the following: Grade 12 ABM students. The study will aim to acquire the sufficient time to be spent in studying towards an effective study management, which will help the Grade 12 ABM students gain knowledge on how to manage time well. They would also be able to integrate that knowledge in having good study habits and apply proper time allocation for studying. Upcoming ABM students. The results and output of this study will prepare the upcoming ABM students for the subjects that they are going to take up and deal with it using good study habits all throughout the school year. It can also help in managing their studies effectively. Students in general. The study’s subjects are students, and the results are based on the students output, so they can use the data gathered from the research study to improve their study habits and help in managing their time as well as their studies. Furthermore, they can apply proper time allocation on their studies. Scope and Limitations This research study mainly focuses on study management or management of studies of Grade 12 ABM students in Senior High Department of University of Cebu - Banilad Campus

with the selected subjects: Finance and ABM2. It will tackle the students time spent for studying, to which the goal of the study is to get the sufficient time for the students to allocate in studying the said subjects in order to have an effective management of studies. The study will also tackle study habits and academic performance as sub-variables of the research study. The management of studies of students, as well as the time spent in studying, the study habits and academic performance are determined based only on their allocation of his/her time towards studying , repetitive pattern conducted when studying, grades in its report card and whether he/she has been rewarded due to its skills. The study is limited only to the responses of ABM students on the structured survey questionnaire that they are going to answer and only focusing on the two subjects, the finance and ABM2. These selected ABM students are only the Grade 12 students in University of Cebu Banilad campus Senior High School Department, taking up Accountancy, Business and Management strand. Grade 11 students in the said school were not included in the study. The study will be conducted in the University of Cebu - Banilad campus and data gathering will be done on August 4, 2017 and will take 2 weeks to finished.
