Chapter 4: Working with Data Summary In Chapter 4, the author Mr. Kirk describes about the concept of working with data. Data is the critical raw material and it plays a fundamental role in Data visualization. This chapter introduces key foundations for data literacy used for Data visualization and the importance of difference between normalized and tabulated datasets and different types of data. Mr. Kirk walks through the stages of working with data.  Data acquisition: Gathering the raw material.  Data examination: Identifying physical properties and meaning.  Data transformation: Enhancing your data through modification and consolidation.  Data exploration: Using exploratory analysis and research techniques to learn.

Highlights: Chapter focuses on salient aspects of data and statistical literacy. This chapter can be easily understood by someone with least prior data experience. Understanding the different types of data as it will have huge influence on many aspects of the workflow as it determines the explanatory influence, editorial thinking, charts and color choices and layout design. Data types are distinguished by qualitative and quantitative. The book also covers data visualization challenges involves univariate and multivariate statistical techniques

Ideas and thoughts: This chapter gives an in- depth overview of data visualization concepts. However the book does not talk about the in depth statistical concepts behind data visualization. Understanding statistical concepts play a vital role when it comes to influencing the audience. This book is more on the theoretical side than practical. Since it is important to understand the theoretical concepts before one can dive into practical, this book is a great start.

Application: I currently work in healthcare where I deal with large amount of data. These concepts that I studies would definitely be of great help once I start applying them. This data comes from various sources like EMR, HER, HMS, financial data etc. The easier way to interpret large amount of data is through data visualization. With visual components like charts, graphs, and maps, data visualization tools provide an accessible way to see and understand trends, outliers, and patterns in data. In Healthcare industry by using a bar chart we can promptly give additional insights that may have been progressively hard to see in tabular format– for example, shifts in the relative expenses between divisions, just as peaks that could show an issue that should be tended to, or possibly further examined. Using visualization tools such as Power BI helps decision making to derive analytical results.

Chapter 5: Establishing Your Editorial Thinking Summary In chapter, Mr. Kirk outlines how to translate to data work and design work to translate to data visualization. Data breaks down total organizational behavior across many geographic regions. After looking at data closely and discovering interesting patterns in data analysis. Mr. Kirk explains similarity between data visualization and photography and covers three concepts that underpin editorial thinking- Angle, Framing and Focus. Highlights: This chapter emphasizes on how effective and efficient thinking is the difference between a failed and success visualization. The author walks us through the steps to land with a great visualization solution by talking explicitly about how the mindset of the data visualizer has to be. The workflow explained offers a creative and analytical process in developing a good visualization solution, by recommending good practical tips. Application: This chapter details a few important characteristics of business analyst. The author speaks about communication. He gives great piece of advice when he talks about how communication has to be two way. This can be applied in my current workspace as I am working on transitioning from data analyst to business analyst. Another important aspect he speaks about is attention to detail which is a very important quality when it comes to requirement gathering. Lack of attention to detail characteristics in an individual could lead to errors thereby causing the integrity of an entire project to crumble to the ground. My day to day activities as a business analyst involves talking to

various people and taking notes while doing so can be followed from now on. Also sketching down ideas using pen and paper could help.

Chapter 6: Data Representation Summary In Chapter 6, the author describes different ways of encoding data and this comprises combination of two properties- marks (visible features such as dots, lines and areas) and attributes (size, position or colors). The books also talks about the factors influencing and various considerations along with different chart types such as categorical, hierarchical, relational, temporal, and spatial as visual encoding is the fundamental understanding of data representation and the various practical application. The books explains the importance of defining your purpose of what are we trying to accomplish with this visualization and what is a successful outcome. Highlights: This chapter emphasizes on how visualization uses tools that offer chart menus and how these charts can facilitate comparison among the categories and how textual data visualization needs transformation. The range of categorical and quantitative values that would influence the type of chart to choose. Application: This chapter details a few important characteristics of business analyst.
