Description

Amelia Gaillard Professor Collins February 12, 2018 Tedtalks Video 1 The voices in my head – Eleanor Longden. This video is on YouTube and it is a tedtalks video that is 14 minutes and 17 seconds. In this video Schizophrenia is the mental illness talked about. Eleanor was a regular everyday student going to college when the symptoms started. She was in class and a voice in her head started to talk to her. At first she thought he voice was from another student, but she looked around and noticed it wasn’t. At first the voice wasn’t harmful to her, however as time progressed things began to become difficult for her. She was hospitalized for an incident that she tried to drill a hole in her head to make the voices escape from her head. After that she focused on a positive way to get better and to learn from her voices as they told her what her subconscious fears were. In my opinion this video was an interesting video because she was a normal student like me when her illness began and it began out of no where. Even though she had an illness she didn’t let her effort her even though it brought her down to a dark place, she rose above it. This video was like the class assignment we did with the ipod and the schizophrenic voices. However, its not a class assignment its her real life. For myself, I can definitely see myself working with this population. I have always been interested in mental illnesses and would love to learn more. This video is a good video to show someone the positive way that a person can benefit from help of counselors to

be able to overcome or even just understand what a person who has this illness is going through.

Amelia Gaillard Professor Collins February 12, 2018 Ted Talk 2 Toward a new understanding of mental illness – Thomas Insel. This video was a very informative video pertaining to the information about all different disorders whether dealing with different parts of the body. Especially, dealing with non mental illnesses in the beginning then leading to them. He basically categorized the importance of how people think about disorders and how people mainly don’t see mental illnesses as a real disorder. He also discussed how prevalent these disorders are and how we have to start focusing on the damage that it does to our brains, especially schizophrenia. In my opinion this was a very informative video, however, I thought it was going to be a more focused based on the different types of mental disorders. Even though this video did express the other view of the disorders and how many people don’t take into account the seriousness of mental disorders, he’s telling people how we should start to better our future. I feel this video relates to what we learned in class by the disorders we have already talked about and how most people still don’t look at these disorders as an actual illness, which is upsetting. However, it is a fact that us as the new generations should know and help change. I can defiantly see myself working in this

population and trying to become an advocate to help spread awareness as well. People who have mental illnesses need our help to get better and we should be able to provide them the tools to be. As for viewing this video again, I feel like this video would be great for people who don’t completely understand mental illness and would like to be given a little insight into understanding the basics of them....
