Description

MENTIFACT: The artifact Bul-ul isn’t an ordinary object for the sculpture among the Ifugao. It is something that plays a very significant part in Ifugao rice agriculture particularly during the protection of the palay harvest inside the granary or Ifugao house. The figure bul-ul is exceedingly given the respect and praise based on a belief that spirits of their dead ancestors reside on it and in the event that the figure isn’t being properly treated with such humility the spirits may response in return with such undesirable hostile mood. Sickeness and pestilence may be felt as sign of this discontentment by Gods. The Ifugao people is based on ancestor adore and the worship of spirits and gods of nature; they are pagans. Rice gods are particularly respected. These bululs are activated through ritual, the bulol guardian figures are believed to contain spirits capable of ensuring abundant harvests, increasing rice yields and protecting against catastrophe. Shaped like a rice mortar, the distinctive base of the sculpture may be a visual interface to its spiritual purpose. The pairing of male with female could be a crucial feature of Cordilleras hereditary craftsmanship. These bulul guardians represent the harmonious union of opposing elements, the protection of communities from malicious spirits and the promise of great fortune.
