Along the way, bonds strengthen, skills heighten, and superstitions are compiled. 1. Believe it or not, one of my superstitious routines before every practice and game was to a) first put on my left cleat, then my right, b) then go back to tie the left shoe followed by the right. C. Hi, my name is Kristen and tonight I am going to talk to you about what softball culture is: 1. the unbreakable bonds, dugout chatter, superstitions, and pure competition. 2. I am also going to talk about the pride and joy of every softball player: her glove.

1. Over the past few decades, the interest in softball has grown and its culture has developed immensely (Cleats Sports 2012). 2. Softball allows a group of female athletes to come together as one and fight to the finnish (Barker 2014). 3. Teammates, both past and present, create bonds that last a lifetime (King 2016). 4. The best coaches understand that chemistry is very important in softball, every player has to completely trust the others on the field (Barker 2014). a) Team drama can ultimately ruin a team’s playing ability. b) One of my favorite coaches, Russ Heffley, would tell his players (1) “You know seperation of church and state? Well let's try separation of drama and softball.” 5. Dugout chatter, whether it be chanting, dancing, or creating beats, is also very important in softball. a) It is important to keep a fun environment in the dugout (Hays 2015), to keep everyone engaged and enjoying the game. 6. Superstition is also a big influencer in softball culture. a) When athletes play well or win a game, they assume it was because of what they did or did not do, (1) causing players to build strict routines of what has to be done and what is to be avoided at all costs.

b) A popular superstition is that letting coach use your bat for pregame can make it hot and help you get out of a slump. 7. Above all of these factors, competition is the main driving force of softball players. a) Vince Lombardi, famous football coach, said it best: (1) “Winning isn’t everything, it's the only thing.” b) Every softball player wants to win, needs to win, to keep moving forward. c) Several softball coaches say to win every pitch (Scarborough 2017), (1) do everything you possibly can to better yourself and your team every time the ball is in play. B. Artifact 1. The artifact of softball culture is the glove. 2. Every player’s mitt is at the core of her game. a) Every scuff and stain represents the hard work she has put in, (1) the extra repetitions, private lessons, and individual work. 3. When a softball player picks a glove, she does not run to the store and grab just anything. a) She puts a lot of time into picking a glove that will help her execute a higher level of play. b) She chooses her favorite brand and size while customizing it

(1) the way a basketball player customizes his shoes. c) She can then add patches or embroidery to personalize her glove in a way that is special to her (Deas 2015). 4. That glove will be her most prized possession (Kurkjian 2012). a) She will play catch with her teammates and take thousands of ground and fly balls with it. b) She will trust that glove more than she trusts anyone. 5. Before every game she will carry on a routine, a) maybe placing her glove upright on the foul line or b) rubbing chalk on it for good luck. 6. The glove is softball’s artifact because there would be no game without the glove. 7. Diamonds are a girl's best friend right? a) A mitt is a softball player’s best friend. III.

Conclusion A. Softball is a rapidly developing culture but its roots will never change. 1.

The bond between teammates will always exist a) along with the dugout chatter and superstitions.

2. Competition will continue to drive players to give it their all B. Every softball player will put her mitt on a pedestal, value it, trust it. C. The classic pressure play in softball will always exist. 1. Bottom of the seventh.
