The word Guyana is indigenous symbolizing “the land of many waters”. Today I will be discussing the culture of Guyana. I have experienced this culture years ago. My entire family was born in Guyana besides the newer generation. I was able to gain more knowledge from them in addition to further research. The areas I will focus on will be identity, communication context, and power distance.

The first thing I will focus on will be their cultural identity. Guyana is generally a collectivist society; however, some aspects of the society are shifting to more of an individualist culture. There could be several reasons, one of which could be the change in family structure – more single parent families and less extended families, another reason is, employment – more persons in families are now employed. Nevertheless, the sub-culture among Indians in Guyana seems to have maintained a higher level of collectivist culture than some other groups. Part of the reason for the collectivist culture among Indians is based on their historical cultural context which goes back to Asia and Asians being more high context than other regions. The second thing I will be focusing on will be communication context. Low-context communication are direct and explicit with meaning simply conveyed verbally. The official language of Guyana is English, introduced in colonial times by the dominant British culture. Guyanese culture utilizes low-context communication as demonstrated by their direct and even blunt speech, at times. Being “very direct and to the point”, Guyanese are known to
