MGMT 1001 – Spot Collection 2 Brendon Zhu – z3459250 Topic 2: What is Management? As the CEO of McDonald’s Australia, what is Catriona Noble’s role? Using the four functions as a guide, what activities does she need to undertake in managing the Australian operations of McDonald’s? How would this differ for a first assistant manager at a McDonald’s restaurant?

Catriona Noble’s role as the CEO of McDonald’s Australia include responsibilities that vary from marketing, public affairs, operations, supply chain as well as the ongoing development and integration of McDonald’s business plan in Australia.

An important role for Noble is the responsibilities of defining goals and developing plans in managing the Australian operations of McDonalds such as changes which she has implemented including extended trading hours with more 24 hour operations allowing customers more flexibility. In order to lead this culture of adapting to change Catriona Noble has been passionate about embracing and initiating change through the organisation of peoples, ideas and responsibilities in order to achieve improvement within McDonald’s Australia. This has been achieved through her emphasis on building strong relationships with customers, team members and suppliers by being an inspirational leader. An example of this would be the her profound impact in achieving a larger range of new items on the McDonald’s menu such as healthier options which include salads and wraps. Noble is also very aware of monitoring the changing consumer tastes as well as the criticisms that have targeted the unhealthy choices available on the McDonald’s menu. By correcting work performance she has been active in pursuing an option to investigate alternative cooking platforms in order to develop a more healthier way to cook so that the operations within McDonalds may be open to change in order to compete in a challenging catering market.

This would differ from a first assistant manager at McDonald’s who would be directly involved with producing products of McDonald’s such as burgers or servicing the customers such as a cashier. Catriona Noble is a top manager and is responsible for making decisions for McDonald’s Australia which would affect the organisation nationwide.

MGMT 1001 – Spot Collection 2 Brendon Zhu – z3459250 Write 200 words summarizing Cunliffe’s argument.

Cunliffe’s main argument in his article is that management and the realities of being a manager is not defined by set concrete values by providing an alternative perspective of the definition of who managers are and what their role entails. Cunliffe investigates the different ways of thinking on management and how managers have been constructed within history resulting in his view that our ideas of what management is may be open to a more contemporary approach. By believing that management derives from human interaction this leads to more relevant approach that is more shaped towards reality resulting in a different way of thinking between what we think managers should do as opposed what it takes to be doing management. By being more self reflexive in thinking about our interactions with others this reasoning helps to establish our response to the ‘organisational realities’ in order to for to be effective in managerial roles. Rather than accepting the current fixed representation of management set forth by previous ideas and definitions, Cunliffe promotes a rethinking of what management means allowing for a liberal approach which may be altered according to changing demands within organizations today and the responsibilities of 21st Century management which have differed from the past.

What are the key issues in the case study “Challenge the Boss or Stand Down?”

A key issue in this case study is the restrictive nature in the relationship between Thomas Green and his new boss Frank Davis. The relationship between Thomas and Frank is strained from the differing outlook between the pair as Thomas was the ‘lone gun account executive’ as opposed to the more ‘regional strategy development’ adopted by Frank. These contrasting views has impacted their roles within the organisation as Thomas is now forced into a more rigid routine as Frank attempts to ‘keep closer tabs’ reducing the flexibility of Thomas ability at work which ultimately lowers the amount of trust felt by both parties. The inability for Thomas to voice his concerns is a key issue as it inhibits his potential to contribute towards achieving the goals within the organisation to the point where Thomas’ suggestions, opinions or perspective are not considered for review. While from the point of view of Frank, the key issue revolves around the dealing with public opposition by team members and repairing any strained relationships between employees so that they don’t ‘step out of line’....
